Many Latin names hide the secrets of where the plant is found, its colour, flowering times, leaf pattern, natural habitat and all sorts of other information that's extremely useful to the gardener: if you want a plant for a shady place, choose one with a name ending in sylvestris ('of woods'), while if your garden is dry, look out for the suffix epigeios ('of dry places').More than just a dictionary of plant names, this fascinating book explains the meaning of hundreds of Latin plant terms, grouped into handily themed sections such as plants that are named after famous women, plants that are named after the shape of their leaves, plants that are named after their fragrance or the time of year that they flower. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Stellar! By Mathew Paust "Grandma" is the hero of A House Made of Stars, a stunning debut novel by Tawnysha Greene. Grandma is also my new hero. A truly wonderful character, well beyond, I am sure, her depiction through the sensibility of a desperate, intelligent child. She's a literary marvel.And the child! Her voice is perfect as we watch her reluctantly catching on to the horror around her—the cruel insanity of her father, the Old Testament submissiveness of an otherwise loving mother--hungrily embracing the hopeful glimpses she sees in others of a better life. The strength and savvy of her sister, another, subtly surprising grace that keeps us hopeful along with the narrator through their nearly unbearable awakening.Now we come to the narration itself, which is ingeniously artful in its apparent simplicity. The limitations of the children's view augmented by their aural disability gives us a gentle vantage of irony that obviates the precociousness too often appearing in such voices, when the clever adult can be seen behind the narrative curtain. The author's hand is occasionally glimpsed in House, but not awkwardly, and only near the end, quite in step with the girl's awakened consciousness.This story feels so real I cannot but wonder at its source. Greene mentions “journals” in her acknowledgments, and so, along with the especially heart-wrenching authenticity of a scene in which the children are beaten, I am fairly confident this is based on true events, and this saddens me to the core. But if it is purely fictitious, Greene's imagination is unquestioningly a celestial gift.Either way, if the fifty shades of fickle in the contemporary world of publishing allows room for justice, A House Made of Stars will become the standout success it fully deserves to be.

Regarding A House Made of Stars by Tawnysha Greene By Gary Hardaway Regarding A House Made of Stars by Tawnysha GreeneExpertly modulated suspense, precise and skillful prose, engaging and disturbing characterization, vivid and economical description, and an expertly crafted narrative arc make A House Made of Stars a harrowing but extraordinarily satisfying novel.Its narrator/protagonist names no names as if to make anyone specific and individual with a name would bring them to the attention of the monster, Daddy, and his co-dependent, Momma. But, to paraphrase Lowell, you must pity the monsters even as you fear them. The shadings of character are subtle and humanely complete in Ms. Greene’s finely imagined and crafted debut. The representations of mental illness are the most insightful I have read since Sophie’s Choice.The modulation of intensity and relief is musical, reminiscent of the artistry of a late Mozart symphony. Like Mozart, too, is the utter transparency of the prose which, like Mozart’s orchestration, allows events, settings, and characterizations their full melodic power.I was honored and lucky to receive and read an “uncorrected proof” of A House Made of Stars because its author and I are both members of the literary website Fictionaut.com where I first read, loved, and remarked chapters from the novel in progress. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Good Book to Read and Discuss By Beth I found A House Made of Stars to be a tragic, haunting novel vividly told through the eyes of a 10 year old. As the reality of her dysfunctional family situation unfolds with each page, the girl tries to make sense of the adults in it. It was a quick read, filled with so many emotions thanks to the descriptive storytelling of the author. I loved the strength of the girls and the grandmother. Despite several disturbing events that might seem to lead to a hopeless future, the end message is one of hope. Tawnysha Greene has done excellent work for her first novel by being able to convey the thoughts and feelings of the narrator so well. I also enjoy books that lead to good discussions after, which this books does.

By Katie Kernan I always wanted to have a garden of Bonsai at home but when I tried it a few years ago, I failed and the tree that I planted had died. I came across this book one day and decided to download it as it was free that time. Upon reading this book, I tried planting a bonsai. I followed every steps mentioned in this book.Complying to every procedures and precautions was made easy by this author which I really liked because I'm not really good in planting. Although, I have already tried planting different kinds of plants before, I still consider myself a beginner when it comes to planting so I really needed a reference that can teach me all the fundamentals of planting to raising a bonsai.Overall, this book has been really helpful. I would recommend this book for beginners to Bonsai.

We visited this temple near Kyoto and I was amazed by how beautiful the Bonsais where meticulously decorated in the shrine’s garden.After arriving home, I decided to make a hobby out of planting and decorating Bonsais. I bought some books about Bonsais but this one it probably my favorite. Simple yet full of details…but I just have some problems with book though. It came short with the illustrations…pictures can add a bit of life to the book.

Non-Functional Calendar By TammyJo Eckhart Completely disappointed in this coloring calendar.First the designs are very lightly inked making it a challenge to see if you need glasses or have less than ideal lighting.Second the daily spaces on the calendar are too small to really write in at all.Third there are no holes so you cannot easily hang this up.Fourth the layout of the dates and the designs do not make it easy to hang up even if you punch your own holes or use tape or something to hang it up. They are side by side as though you are looking at a regular book not flip up and down like a calendar usually is. I'll add two photos to show you.No idea what to do to with this. Too disappointed to gift it to anyone else. Wasted my money.

This book illustrates the key information about cavoodle dogs and I was really happy I could learn all of the material in one nicely explained place. As I read I quickly became aware of the ins and outs of this breed and considering how much I like them, this was truly invaluable for me. There are details as well and I found myself becoming educated on the various technicalities about this breed. Two thumbs up!

It is packed with what looks like everything an owner needs to know, and more! It tells you about how to choose the breeder you buy your puppy from which we really needed. What to look for and what to avoid - you know the questions to ask when you start looking up to going to pick the dog up. It also has details of everything important for a cavapoo-lover. Not too complicated either! We learned everything about training, feeding and generally caring for our new arrival. There is also what seems like advanced information on dog behaviour/psychology, diseases etc which we found really useful. Excellent read and well worth the money! This book was a fantastic purchase which helped us to understand the importance of training and caring for our puppy properly right from the start. We would highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of adding one of these friendly loveable dogs to their family or who anyone who loves cavapoos.

I’ve been wanting to know more about this breed of dogs for a while, and this guide has offered a wealth of information that has been really helpful for me in familiarizing myself with them. It explores the breeders, health, and how to care for them and I feel like I am much much more aware of what to expect now. I liked the extensive research that was done for this book and overall the information is really nicely presented too. I would highly recommend this one for anyone interested in these dogs.

Just as the title advertised, it is filled with styles inspired by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. Usually when I buy a book, I find a few designs that I like and put post-it notes on the pages with projects I would like to try. This book made me use a lot of post-its! I am very impressed by this 144 page book. There are many beautiful techniques shown for making necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. As a bead weaver who appreciates tribal and ancient styles, this book is a must have.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Needs A Better Art Director By Likes Books A Lot If you like Ruth Bader Ginsberg's beaded collars you will love this book. Her collars are fine but don't work with a lot of necklines and the majority of these necklaces have the same problem. They will not work very well with most contemporary clothing, other than open necklines. The designs seem to be mostly netted designs. I like the idea of this book. The designs are ok, the project diagrams are fabulous. The photography of the pieces does not show them at their best, actually it does opposite, in many cases the cloth under the piece drains them of color. Too bad. I had to return it.

I recommend this book to those who are interested in Egyptian or other ancient world jewelry, but others beaders will also find inspiration in it. All the materials are not easily available (depending on where you live and whether you are willing to order from e.g. U.S. web shops), but the materials are easy to replace, and suggestions are also given on these.One reason why I love the book is that the projects inspire you to make your own variations.

NOT for beginners...sadly, not even with Book 1 By Jane in Milwaukee I preordered this book and expected to get it next month, the announced release date. But it arrived yesterday--and I's not even a Vine reviewer--and I thoroughly perused it.*sigh* I wish I could give it more a ringing endorsement but here are the pros and cons:Pros:---every single page is laden with color photos with captions and directions accompanying each step of a stitch.---there are many stitches and a good variety....um...I'm out.Cons: you must get the first book:A-Z of Embroidery Stitches (A-Z of Needlecraft)What's even worse is that even COMBINING these two books, unless you're a very experienced and expert stitcher, I guarantee you will not be able to teach yourself how to do many if any of these stitches.---the pictures are WAY too small to best show how to make a given stitch.---while there seems to be a sufficient number of photos, way too often, the first few steps are squeezed into too few pictures and then later steps are stretched out longer than you need.---there is a lot of discussion about needles, hoops and fibers but very little on fabric.I have hundreds of needlework books including dozens of stitch encyclopedias and dictionaries. I am a huge niggler of WHAT is shown and the WAY it is shown if it's a book on technique. You should be able to assume that a book titled "A~Z" will be absolutely comprehensive and easy to understand. Not so, here. I smiled when I first opened the book and saw my MAIN stitch I use to gauge a stitch book: the bullion knot. Hike up the Look Inside! feature at the top of the page and scoot down to page 5: a pretty rose shown with the twists going in both directions. The point about this stitch the author is making is about "S" twist and "Z" twist threads. Are you lost already? I have studied embroidery fibers and the huge variety fascinates me: silk, cotton, linen, metal, artificial, blends, etc. If I weren't already pretty clear about the "twist" of fibers, I couldn't tell what was going on here: the fiber is twisted clockwise or counterclockwise and the bullion knot is twisted around the needle clockwise or counterclockwise...so are you double twisting it one way or the other...or making the twisting "cancel each other out?" I don't know.What's worse is if you want to make that pretty rose, you're outta luck: you can flip through the whole book and from the table of contents to the index, there is no reference to the bullion whatsoever.AND while I was looking through this to report to you what type of embroidery you can do here like surface stitchery vs. counted thread, I realized I was having to look closely at what I could make out of the fabric...but I shouldn't have to work that hard. LITERALLY, the only mention of fabric appears in little purple boxes on pages 58 and 88. On page 58 you're warned that embroidery will often show from the back so you need to make sure your thread is suitable for your material. On page 88, you're given a listing of the various fibers that make up fabrics as I described threads above...but that gives NO CLUE what threads to use on what material. The vast majority of fibers used here to display stitches are yarns too thick even for crewel work. Especially since several colors can be used to show one stitch, thicker fiber can make it easier to make out the stitch. But now you have no idea how many strands of floss should be used on what count of linen.I can't give this less than 4 stars because it is very well-written and I will be able to get a lot of use out of it...but only to complement my other more comprehensive stitch guides.

I have just added embroidery to my list of talents. This book is awesome in many ways. It has beautiful color pictures of the stitch you want to try. It then gives more pictures in ways to use the particular stitch, and pictures of the stitch in an actual project. Its layout and directions are easy enough for a beginner like me or even challenging enough for the more experienced. This purchased turned out to be just what I needed to get started on my new craft.
