Back in the 1930’s, Lucy Dawson sketches of dogs that appeared in both American and British magazines attracted admiring fans. An earlier collection of her dog portraits from that period and now out of print has been reissued. Presented here are about twenty graphite or pastel sketched images of beguiling dogs along with one cat with the artist’s crisp notes on the temperament or history or personality quirk of the animal model. Each drawing of the posed and poised dog placed on a chair or rug is accompanied by several quick sketches of the animal in flight, or majestically sitting up observing the visitor, or else just feigning indifference with glowing eyes. Different views of different personalities are deftly expressed by the stroke of the pencil. Dog devotees will find much in the captured canine miens that will remind them of their own pets, and children will adore recognizing features of their pets while gazing at the drawings. Further enriching this collection mounted on sketchbook paper is the foreword by Ann Patchett.
