This is a book I'll carry with me to the lumberyard to understand properties of exotic species (particularly toxicity). The book is beautifully done and written clearly for any woodworker to identify and obtain wood properties (I didn't know that Lignum Vitae wasn't the hardest wood; it's 'only' #3). This stands up well, and in some areas exceeds, Bruce Hoadley's masterpiece "Identifying Wood". Everywoodworker should have both.
6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. WOOD would be your Lumber Bible By Tyy Daymon Suburb book for people that work with wood. A book done right for beginner or master of wood makers. Uses Bold for industry words then defines them and if needed additional education. The Pictures are remarkable and as perfect a representation of the wood i have seen in a book. Loaded with useful info and numbers you can use in woodwork like Elasticity and rupture measurements. Too bad there isn't a list of what wood combinations look well together. The quality of information is outstanding and unmatched for woodworking. The physical construction of the book is heirloom quality. Hardcover reinforced, the pages are well bound to the spine and each page is quality paper with a good hand. I can't believe the quality make of the book and information. This will be the go to for those makers needing info about wood simply put there is not a book like this with the viewpoint of a woodworker. I have 8 books about wood now i use one. (FYI i have used his web site for this info)

By Bill Brevard I have used the author's on-line wood data base for a very long time, and I am thrilled to have the information available in a book. This volume is even more helpful than the on-line data base for the way it gathers information about related species and allows the reader to make comparisons. I have a local broker who often gets in supplies of exotic hardwoods about which he really knows very little. The wood data base has helped me identify possible uses for some of those woods. Now this book will help me even more. If you work with wood, you simply must have this book. I also have to comment on the price. I have some experience with publishing, and I am astonished that Eric Meier was able to offer this book for so little. The first print run was rather short, so grab a copy while you can.
