Review I could go on about why this should be the one interior design book you purchase this year – so let me just say that while I’m not often given to superlatives, I’d happily go on record in saying that this book lives up to its (slightly kitschy) alliterative title. It’s fabulous, and a must-have for the well-informed interior design library. (Carl Dellatore Anthony Lawrence Blog 2015-04-20)
From the Inside Flap
hat runway shows are to fashion design and opening nights are to Broadway, so are designer show houses to the rarefied world of deluxe interior design. And no show house is as storied or revered as New York’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House. For more than four decades, this convention of high society arrives each spring with much pomp and circumstance. Its alumni reads like a Who’s Who of interior décor, from legendary names that have defined design for many years to newcomers waiting in the wings to make their mark.
At Kips Bay, trends begin and traditions are celebrated, all in the interest of furthering the craft of turning houses into homes. And for the designer, adding a Kips Bay room to one’s curriculum vitae stands as a sparkling jewel in the crown of one’s career.
Designer, author and observer of all things stylish, Steven Stolman was born in Boston and raised in West Hartford, Connecticut. A graduate of New York’s Parsons School of Design, he spent many years as a “worker bee” on Seventh Avenue before going out on his own with a collection of resort wear for men, women and children. Sold from his eponymous shops in tony towns like Southampton, Palm Beach, Nantucket and Beverly Hills, his simple, unique designs cut from decorative fabrics became a cult favorite among the smart set; they remain collectors’ items to this day.
In 2011, Stolman was tapped to serve as president of Scalamandré, the renowned textiles house. During his threeyear tenure, he spearheaded an extraordinary brand expansion that brought the Scalamandré name and its iconic motifs to distinctive collections of china and crystal, deluxe bedding, lighting, upholstered furniture, decorative accessories and paper goods that continue to be sold worldwide.
This tome marks Steven Stolman’s third book, following Scalamandré: Haute Décor and Confessions of a Serial Entertainer. He is married to software executive Rich Wilkie and divides his time between homes in Palm Beach, New York and Milwaukee.

As a designer myself having visited dozens of these homes and marveled at the talented expressions from the participants it seems a shame that Steven Stolman did not provide the dates the pictures were taken. Great design however timeless, can not be fully appreciated for its innovation and endurance without knowing the date of its presentation. How better to understand how ahead of it's time the design was or how au currant a room can still be years later.
7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Disappointing By Marilyn Thompson I was disappointed in this book. I have seen, through the years, exciting and beautiful photographs of the Kips Bay projects. Most of the photos in this publication, however, were bland and uninteresting. There were many good quotes from participating decorators but I wanted delicious pictures!

Don't hesitate on this one By A Book Collector I hesitated ordering Steven Stolman's new book on Kips Bay because of the generally less-than-favorable reviews it got here. I forged ahead however, determined that it if didn't live up to its price tag, I would return it. I need not have worried, as it is a wonderful snapshot of forty years of "stage" design by scores of different designers, all very skilled.Within nearly three hundred pages of photographs and very little text, the rooms do all the talking here. I expected splashy spreads by the legendary designers, past and present, whose Kips Bay rooms filled the shelter magazines of their time. I was surprised that while they were represented, inclusion in Stolman's book had more to do with the breadth of design than the name attached to it. Yes, some of the photos suffer from being "pre-digital" in their quality, and yes, there were rooms I wished I could have seen in greater detail (or in a few cases, less) but that's not what this book is about. It presents the tremendous variety in interpretation and handling of space by talented men and women, some now long departed, and how for most, their rooms have remained as good-looking today as when they were done, regardless of how many years ago. Also sprinkled in are several attempts by designers at being terribly innovative and edgy which have not aged as gracefully, however these are relatively few.One criticism: I agree with reviewer Designbooklover's comment that design "cannot be fully appreciated ... without knowing (its) date". The year of execution should have been available to the reader, even if in an appendix. But to quote Zelina Brunschwig: "Good design is forever" and most of the rooms contained in this book prove her right. No designer or design groupie should be without this volume.
