Amazon.com Review Ulysses has been labeled dirty, blasphemous, and unreadable. In a famous 1933 court decision, Judge John M. Woolsey declared it an emetic book--although he found it sufficiently unobscene to allow its importation into the United States--and Virginia Woolf was moved to decry James Joyce's "cloacal obsession." None of these adjectives, however, do the slightest justice to the novel. To this day it remains the modernist masterpiece, in which the author takes both Celtic lyricism and vulgarity to splendid extremes. It is funny, sorrowful, and even (in a close-focus sort of way) suspenseful. And despite the exegetical industry that has sprung up in the last 75 years, Ulysses is also a compulsively readable book. Even the verbal vaudeville of the final chapters can be navigated with relative ease, as long as you're willing to be buffeted, tickled, challenged, and (occasionally) vexed by Joyce's sheer command of the English language.

Among other things, a novel is simply a long story, and the first question about any story is: What happens?. In the case of Ulysses, the answer might be Everything. William Blake, one of literature's sublime myopics, saw the universe in a grain of sand. Joyce saw it in Dublin, Ireland, on June 16, 1904, a day distinguished by its utter normality. Two characters, Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom, go about their separate business, crossing paths with a gallery of indelible Dubliners. We watch them teach, eat, stroll the streets, argue, and (in Bloom's case) masturbate. And thanks to the book's stream-of-consciousness technique--which suggests no mere stream but an impossibly deep, swift-running river--we're privy to their thoughts, emotions, and memories. The result? Almost every variety of human experience is crammed into the accordian folds of a single day, which makes Ulysses not just an experimental work but the very last word in realism.

Both characters add their glorious intonations to the music of Joyce's prose. Dedalus's accent--that of a freelance aesthetician, who dabbles here and there in what we might call Early Yeats Lite--will be familiar to readers of Portrait of an Artist As a Young Man. But Bloom's wistful sensualism (and naive curiosity) is something else entirely. Seen through his eyes, a rundown corner of a Dublin graveyard is a figure for hope and hopelessness, mortality and dogged survival: "Mr Bloom walked unheeded along his grove by saddened angels, crosses, broken pillars, family vaults, stone hopes praying with upcast eyes, old Ireland's hearts and hands. More sensible to spend the money on some charity for the living. Pray for the repose of the soul of. Does anybody really?" --James Marcus

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Frank and Malachy McCourt and 13 Irish actors bring Joyce's short stories to life in this well-produced audiobook. None of the readers employ a thick accent in the narrative portions, but for dialogue they let their imitative talents shine and their Irish lilts bloom. Brendan Coyle and Charles Keating, reading "A Little Cloud" and "Grace" respectively, give such wonderful expression to the idiosyncrasies of every individual voice that the listener is never confused even when numerous men are talking. Joyce wrote only sparingly in actual dialect, but most of the readers interpret his intentions freely and successfully. Fionnula Flanagan is perfect reading "A Mother," her voice shifting easily between prim and proper tones and fiery indignation punctuated with little sighs. It helps that Joyce's writing is so masterful that when Flanagan and the two other actresses read the three stories that revolve around women, their words sound utterly natural. Not all the performances are on the same level—Stephen Rea's cold, somber voice is apt for the meditative beginning and ending sections of the collection's most famous story, "The Dead," but too flat for the central description of a lively party. This audiobook creates the atmosphere of a fireside storytelling session that will hold any listener in rapt attention. (May) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From School Library Journal Grade 4 Up-- Edens has compiled and arranged illustrations from 25 editions of Alice in Wonderland published in the early to mid-1900s. The result is a fascinating look at a variety of illustrative styles. This is far less jarring than one might expect because the original illustrator, John Tenniel, has so strongly influenced his successors that their interpretations are often similar in design. In fact, the fascination in these pictures is the differing details--Alice's dress, her hairstyle, and her expressions tell much about the time period and the artist's viewpoint. Edens has also done a fine job of integrating the pictures with the text. He varies interest by utilizing full-page plates, half plates, vignettes, and even reducing some illustrations to fit the design so the book flows fairly well and these myriad illustrations blend into a whole rather than distract the eye. The reproduction is excellent. A must for collections with historical interest in children's literature and large libraries. --Karen K. By A Customer Ulysses is one of those big, mad bellwethers of a book that X will tell you is the biggest, best, most important blah blah blah and Y will tell you is a load of badly written tripe. Neither X nor Y tend to notice that the book consciously encourages both responses...but, well, I'll get back to the academic riffing in a minute.I first tried to read Ulysses aged about 14 (I was an annoying little boy that way) and didn't get very far. The first three chapters are set in and around the mind of Stephen Dedalus, one of the most ridiculously clever and over-educated characters ever conceived, as he takes breakfast with some friends, teaches in a school some miles south of Dublin and walks along a beach. Along the way, his mind ruminates on subjects as diverse as 16th century underworld slang, his dead mother, and something he calls "the ineluctable modality of the visible" which I'm still struggling with. But he's a curiously ambiguous character, this Stephen; he fancies himself as a poet and rebel but when, on the beach, he picks his nose, he has a quick look around to see that nobody's watching before he smears the snot on a rock. (Joyce likes to poke fun at pretension this way - although he doesn't suggest that Stephen's ideas or rebel stance are completely hollow, either.)The 14-year-old me didn't get that far. I gave up. It wasn't until I was 19 or so that I got as far as chapter four and encountered a Mr. Bloom, pottering around the kitchen making breakfast, that I started to get a grip. Bloom is one of the most likeable characters in fiction. He's a quiet, rather shy, oddly intelligent advertising salesman married to a voluptuous siren of a wife, Molly. Either you're prepared to go the distance with Bloom, or else cast the book aside with a hollow oath, because he's about to spend the entire day walking around Dublin. Nothing will happen except that a man will be buried, a baby will get born, and Bloom will help Stephen when the latter gets into a drunken fracas with some British soldiers. (Ireland was still part of the Union in 1904, and Dublin was a garrison town. Many non-Irish readers concentrate on Joyce's innovation or wit or technical whatever, but Joyce is extremely historically aware, and Ulysses, like all his other books, is riddled with the traces of English domination. These add to the book, rather than diminish it.)Readers who like those clanky, tinpot contraptions known as "plots" may get a tad frustrated. Leaving aside Joyce's gifts for parody (a _tad_ too indulged, in my opinion), the, if you like, human interest in Ulysses is in the details of the to-ing and fro-ing between the characters. A quite banal conversation turns out to have all sorts of fascinating undercurrents; Bloom, who is Jewish and therefore even more of an outsider than Stephen, is extremely good at detecting the hints and shifts in the tones of the people he meets. He keeps running into two things that cause him particular discomfort: anti-Semitic remarks, and reminders that his wife is about to sleep with another man.Ulysses is about language, but that makes it sound like it's some godawful lumbering doorstop written by an English professor. (John Barth, come on down!) It doesn't feel abstract at all; it's full of sights (the band of old sweat inside Bloom's hat), smells (restaurants, horse urine, flowers) and especially sounds (cats, printing presses, trams). I can't think of any other book which transports you so completely to a different place and time. (It might've helped that I grew up in Dublin and knew most of the places that Joyce is writing about.) Borges described Joyce's prose style, at least in the earlier half of the book, as "strong and delicate" and that's a good description. As the day wears on, the book starts to rumble at the foundations and it lurches with increasing unpredictability from style to style. Joyce is making a point about language; that things are altered by the manner in which we describe them. This can get a bit wearisome after a while, but when it works well - as in the chapter where the doings of a young girl on a beach are narrated in the style of a girl's magazine story - it can be very funny and rather touching. The book closes with a mighty tour de force as Molly Bloom sits up and thinks about her life and her curious husband.Okay, that's the beginner's guide. My personal opinion? It's the best Irish book, a constant wonder, irritation and delight to read, and a stunning effort of imagination and intelligence by the most significant and most lavishly talented Irish writer. 20th and 21st century Irish culture is unthinkable without it. I'm grateful that it's there. What else is to be said?

(Because if you're willing to pay this much for a copy of "Ulysses" you obviously take that for granted.) The volume is larger in size than typical hardcover books today, meaning that the type is a decent readable size and the margins are generous (for the note jotting fiends among us). Great care has clearly been taken in the choice of paper and the sewn binding, which allows the book to lay flat during reading and insures years of re-reading. Although there is no dustjacket the cover is made of very durable material; various cover protectors can be found to stand in or, for the really paranoid, a slipcase can be made or found. It should be added that the text is presented as originally published, so there are no notes or glosses to help the first-time or casual reader; neither are the episodes keyed to any of the line numberings found in other editions. However, those wishing to refer to notes would be best off buying one of the helpful readers' companions by Gifford or Blamires anyway. In relation to other available editions, this one occupies a vast middle ground between the throwaway mass-market paperbacks on the one hand and the out-of-reach collectors' editions on the other. The book's durability and elegant though understated presentation should prove most attractive to those readers who intend to read the text again and again, whether for pleasure or for study. In short, this volume is a keeper.

I purchased this edition of the novel three years ago, and since then it sat on my shelf, a mighty 900 page undertaking that I kept putting off. I was reluctant to read it, for I have often heard how difficult it was to get through. Finally, I have read it, and though I believe it presumptuous to call any one book "the best book of all time", I certainly believe that Ulysses could claim that title. First off, it is not a difficult read. If you could get through A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, you can get through Ulysses. I heartily recommend this edition because of the brilliant introduction by Declan Kibard. Before I read Ulysses, I could not understand how this could be the best book of all time. According to my understanding, it was a novel detailing, in 900 pages, one day in the life of a Jewish Irishman, Leopold Bloom. A totally unremarkable day at that. After reading Kibard's introduction, I was fiercely eager to begin the novel. In his introduction, totally some 70 pages, Kibard answers the precise question I had: Why would this book be called the best of all time? This book is never boring, and is actually a quite enjoyable read. It is arranged in 18 chapters, and to me, the most astounding aspect of this piece of literature is the fact that every chapter is written in a different style. Joyce wanted to show that "originality" in terms of style was merely a new arrangement of previous styles, and so shows his brilliance as a writer by changing his technique and method completely in each chapter. It is indeed difficult to believe they were written by the same person. The styles are listed as: Narrative (Young), Catechism (Personal), Monologue (Male), Narrative (Mature), Narcissism, Incubism, Enthymemic, Peristaltic, Dialectic, Labyrinth, Fuga per canonem, Gigantism, Tumescence detumescence, Embryonic development, Hallucination, Narrative (Old), Catechism (Impersonal), Monologue (Female). Some chapters, such as the Cyclops, done in Gigantism, are deliciously satirical and overdone, while others, such as the Lotus-eaters, are sharp and direct. Though Joyce is often called a "stream of consciousness writer", only a few chapters are the truly chaotic stream of consciousness, such as the Oxen of the Sun, the Proteus, and the Sirens. The culmination of absurdity and abstraction occurs in the massive Circe chapter, a play styled as a hallucination in the brothels of Dublin. This novel is nearly impossible to take in with just one reading, and I will be reading it again shortly. On this note, I would say that I heartily recommend reading Ulysses straight through in its original form, rather than labouring under the weight of the hefty annotated edition. A true masterpiece, one of the best books I've ever read, and yes, quite possibly the best book ever written.

Santella This is an excellent guide for anyone just starting out with the interest of prospecting for gold and other minerals. I love that all the maps and locations of BLM throughout the country are provided and the history of individual counties gold recoveries. I would presume if the author knew exactly where the gold is today he wouldn't tell us..LOL If I am lucky enough to file a claim I will check with the county and make sure all instructions and laws are current for my own protection and the fact that this is an ever changing society. I don't have time to look all this up on the internet and am delighted it is done for me.

Schwols In a book that could have been drab and boring, the author's love for his subject shines through, while still retaining the useful and relevant information that will assist all new prospectors on their hunt for gold. While the majority of the book is about location, location, location (that all important topic) there is a useful list of supplies and a great description of how to file a claim. For people who are just getting started, and may feel overwhelmed, he explains in simple steps how to go about creating a claim.I recommend this book for anyone thinking to start on the prospecting life. :)

Most of the measurements are in American units (cups, tablespoons, etc.), but some aren't - 200g of spaghetti is called for in the spaghetti bolognese dinner recipe (which sounds more like my dinner than for the dogs). The language and reference to vegetables is British. The author calls turnips swede, zucchini courgettes, says whilst, etc. As an American I had to translate quite a few things. The author proposes a whole foods plant based diet for dogs. As a vegan I find this fine. Most of the recipes are for things people would eat anyway, minus the salt and omitting ingredients toxic to dogs (chocolate, onions, etc.)The author is a proponent of homeopathy, natural flea repellant, and states "Good breeding genetics is crucial if you are to achier longevity with your canine friend." She talks about good breeding for a paragraph, then as an afterthought at the end of the section she recommends supporting local rescue groups. No where in the book is good veterinary care mentioned. There are many claims about "studies show" but no concrete references or footnotes. The author lists as her credentials "I have read and studied scientific resources regarding canine nutrition for many years..."My recommendation is to save your money. If you are interested in making homemade food for your dog there are much better references. Start with an internet search of foods toxic to dogs and then use regular vegan recipes minus those ingredients.

By richard mumm recieved this book and have looked through the recipes a little and skimmed through some of the other nutrtional info.I'm a long term (40 + years) student of vegetarian nutrition, and it is obvious the author of this book both knows what they are talking about nutritionally and also cares deeply about the health and welfare of our canine friends.will update this review later when I have tried out some of the recipes on our very wonderful 14 year old Great Pyrenees 140 lb. puppy.very highly recommended!

When On Decorating was published in 1989, it immediately became a touchstone for design profesionals and enthusiasts. Since then, the ideas and illustrations within these pages have inspired countless room schemes, vignettes, and color palettes. Mark Hampton's expert insights into the creation of elegant rooms, and his remarkably immediate voice, remain just as relevant today.Posthumously celebrated by Architectural Digest as "one of the wold's twenty greatest designers of all time," Hampton regarded every design project as a collaboration. That same generosity of spirit pervades this book, offering signature principles that can easily be applied to any home. In the Colors section, Hampton makes a convincing case fo using dark green as a neutral, and encourages readers not to fear painting walls red. In Plans, he explains the keys to arranging a living room that telegraphs comfort, not just refinement. In Materials, Hampton demonstrates how strongly patterned wallpaper can visually enlarge a small space, contrary to popular belief.Throughout this colleciton of essays, which were substantially expanded from his popular House & Garden columns, Hampton shares witty anecdotes and observations that render this education in home decoration a delight. Faithfully reproduced with his original, often-emulated watercolor illustrations and with an afterword by his duaghter, reowned designer Alexa Hampton, this beautiful reprint edition is a book to pore over, savor, and share.

Mark Hampton On Decorating, by Mark Hampton

From Library Journal This is a collection of the monthly columns written by the author over a three-year period for House & Garden , plus additional material written especially for the book. Designed and illustrated by Hampton himself, the book is visually attractive. Unfortunately, the text is little more than a tour of the decorating styles of the rich and famous. The author's knowledge of his field is obvious, and his opinions are informed, but the rather breathless, gushy style that works in a popular magazine column does not carry over well as a serious book. Offering little real substance, the chapters all sound the same. Not an essential purchase.- Constance Ashmore Fairchild, Univ. of Illinois Lib., Urbana-ChampaignCopyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From the Inside Flap This book treats essential aspects of design individually: colors, elements, styles, plans, rooms, outdoors, and materials. Illustrated with the author's full-color renderings of his own works.

Loved it (but note: no photos, sketches only) By NYCatHeart It's important to note that this book is really more of an information/reference book...a true "reading tool" versus a visual inspiration book. There are illustrations throughout the book, but they are DRAWINGS/SKETCHES (in color) from Mark Hampton (which in-and-of-itself is quite spiffy since you rarely get to see a designers original sketches). There are NO photos, so if that's what you're expecting, keep moving. That said, I do really like this one. It's written in a very friendly, easy to read style. I also have his daughter Alexa's book that was released last year ("The Language of Interior Design," ISBN 9780307460530), as well as the one his wife authored last year ("Mark Hampton: An American Decorator," ISBN 9780847832880), and you can feel a lot of similarities in his & Alexa's "voices." There is no pretension to be found in either book, which I find refreshing. You will learn quite a bit about the decorating process, things that inspired him, furniture names & styles, how to work with color/pattern/fabrics, and so on, without feeling like you're reading a college textbook. If you can get it, the 2nd book mentioned above, "...an American decorator," is an excellent companion to this as they both chronicle his work thru the decades (this one with sketches, the other with loads of photos). This would also be an excellent book to give to a design student since it shows him working very well with myriad design styles, which is important for any budding designer. While "Language" and "American Decorator" are the more customary large format (aka coffee table) design books with lush photography, this one is a a good bit smaller (but certainly not miniscule). I was surprised when it arrived. Knowing now that it's mostly textual rather than full of photography, it makes sense. Just a little heads-up!

By gi Absolutely the best book on American home design of the contemporary period! It is not a "picture book," though it contains room sketches made by designer. In it Hampton writes about the principles of home decorating and interior design in a style free of professional jargon and in some of the purest, cleanest English to come from a design writer in our time. His prose is like his design style---deceptively simple, clear, welcoming, and entertaining. He has chapters on the elements of design----Colors; Elements (fireplaces, dressing windows, lamplight, mirrors, deep comfort in seating, beds and bedposts, parameters of framing, setting the table, pattern underfoot); Styles (Victorian comeback, Classicism Is Always New, The Delights of Chinoiserie, Fresh Look at Baltic Styles, Early American Purity); Plans (Furniture Placement that Makes a Living Room Work, How to Create Interior Views, etc); Rooms; Materials (fabrics, uses of wallpaper, tassels and fringes, gimps and cords, rugs). Each one is eminently practical and insightful. One has the feel of the writer speaking. In writing about furniture placement in the more "public" rooms of a house, Hampton writes, "To dwell on large partieis can begin to sound silly. Think, instead, of room in which conversation can flourish, whether between two people or among ten, rooms in which visitors feel immediately at home and would rather sit than stand---rooms that really work. I believe the rooms in which all these things happen are those that are very well arranged. They appear to be comfortable to the eye even before one has experienced the physical comfort."He offers "a little syllogism" for approaching furniture arrangement. "All rooms look their est if they are used by the people they belong to. Unless a room is arranged in a way that allows it to function comfortably, it will never be used. Therefore, no room will look its best until it is comfortably arranged." How many unused, expensive American "living rooms" could be improved with this simple logic! Hampton continues to elaborate and illustrate this principle with examples and drawings, but that little syllogism alone is enough to guide even the rankest first-time homeowner who wants to plan her or his own home. His chapter on framing is a jewel in this day when one sees walls of identically framed art. He reminds readers that frames should match the subject and time period of the painting. If they do that, they will find welcome homes in any room. "When I frame a number of pictures that I am going to hang together," Hampton writes, "I use several framers to avoid a mass-produced look." While most do not have access to the variety Hampton had, one can always take the paintings in one at a time, asking the framer to work with the work of art to be framed, not the color scheme of a particular room. And how typically practical Hampton is in this, for framed with the proper considerations, paintings can be moved about with redecorations or changes of mind. The chapter on colors is also terrific and is oh-so-Hampton American clear. Look in any style magazine for the home today , and you will see white walls with blue-and-white china. I don't think I've seen one green room that used this porcelain as decoration. Yet in the chapter "The Versatility of Green," Hampton reminds the reader that green walls welcome blue-and-white china. He encourages reconsideration of all the shades of green, from the rich darks to the light green that Robert Adam used, and he explains exactly how to use this color in a room.I wish I had this book at hand when I began furnishing the well-designed, sturdy home my husband and I had built in the late 1960s in a classic style in an era of ranch-style houses. I would have been more confident in some of the decisions I made as we furnished it, piece-by-piece over time, from "finds" and inherited pieces and furniture my husband produced in his amateur workshop after traditional pieces. Looking back, I think it turned out so well as it did because we followed the central principle Hampton commends: comfort and practical usage produces beauty. And because we'd trained our eyes by looking at lots of Southern rooms that had been lived in over time.I purchased it now that I ham reworking a room or two and thinking it would be filled with large-page photograph of Hampton-designed rooms. I'm so glad it was not that. If I were able to give but one book to a young couple just starting out in their first apartment or home or someone remodeling a room or so, this would be it. For when one understands the simple principles of design for the home, he is freed to make his home an expression of his own taste and time and needs----and in a beautiful, comfortable, highly usable way.I think this is also a book for anyone considering "the American mind"---the worldview of America. Some books are joys to read. This is one of them. It is also the most helpful interior design book for the average person I've come across. You'll never regret owning it!

Keefer In reading Duane Hampton's book on her husband Mark, it is mentioned that Mark loved giving lectures on design. Upon reading this, I felt wistful wishing I could have attended his talks. I even looked on youtube to see if they were filmed. Found an interview there of Mark which was fun to watch. Mark was continually visiting historic buildings around the world and reading about design as an enthusiastic life-long learner. This book feels like a collection of his talks, the next best thing to hearing him lecture. In this book on decorating he shares his enthusiasm, education and erudition with the reader. Although the chapters feel like lively talks on each design topic, many of them were written as columns for HOUSE & GARDEN magazine. The book is divided into seven sections: Colors, Elements, Styles, Plans, Rooms, Outdoors, and Materials. I found all of the chapters interesting - some of my favorite chapters included English country style, the slipper chair, living room arrangements and chintz. There are insightful design tips sprinkled throughout. Fetching illustrations by Mark featuring examples of his topics add much interest and grace to the this book. You may find yourself googling the names of designers, buildings and rooms he mentions to see what he is talking about. It is an informal and conversational education.I found this a fetching and delightful read, and am glad to look at aspects of the design world through Mark Hampton's eyes and understanding.

A fourth way By Phillip Taylor MBE A ‘FOURTH WAY’ TO RESOLVE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY DISPUTES: THE DEFINITIVE WORK OF REFERENCE, NOW IN A NEW THIRD EDITIONAn appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green ChambersAs part of the Construction Practice Series published by Informa Law from Routledge, Taylor and Francis, this practice book which is now in its third edition, is well established as the definitive reference work for practitioners, particularly those at the Construction Bar.Even a cursory read of this eminently readable book should remind anyone, legal practitioner or not, that as author CyrilChern points out, ‘the construction industry has a reputation for disputes and conflict.’ This is not surprising when you consider the nature of any building project, from bungalow to bridge, tunnel or trans-continental railway. Large or small, such projects are collaborative, involving up to thousands of personnel and carried out under contract often against tight time constraints over lengthy time periods. If anything goes wrong, which it almost inevitably will, the need for swift and effective dispute resolution arises, especially in situations where the usual three routes of arbitration, mediation and most commonly, litigation prove impractical for any number of reasons.Enter the emergence of the Dispute Board. Having evolved since the 1980s approximately, the dispute board is ‘a creature of contract’, says Chern -- a ‘fourth way’ if you like, as a flexible alternative to the traditional methods of dispute resolution -- and generally one with teeth, i.e. -- with the authority and decision-making powers to get the disputatious parties to come to an agreement. This book offers a clear explanation of what a dispute board is, what it does and how it accomplishes its aims. Intended for novices as well as seasoned practitioners, it provides actual examples of the forms, reports, recommendations and decisions that daily occur on dispute boards worldwide.Traditional mediators and arbitrators take note that one of the most important differences between a dispute board and the usual methods of dispute resolutions is that the dispute board is appointed, not after a dispute arises -- but before.Set up at the beginning of a project rather than at the end, the dispute board is anticipatory and pro-active, rather than reactive to events and circumstances that may have happened long before. Also of vital importance is that the appointees to the dispute board are generally well known in the industry, with acknowledged expertise and active involvement in the administration of the project -- and the authority to influence its progress. The author Cyril Chern, an expert in this evolving field, is a practicing barrister and in addition to his formidable array of credentials, is also a Chartered Architect, Chartered Arbitrator and Accredited Mediator and Adjudicator, with over 40 years’ experience in handling commercial and construction matters in over twenty countries worldwide.‘The construction industry has a reputation for disputes and conflict’ he says, in which ‘most construction projects end in litigation.’ Therefore if you are a lawyer practicing at the Construction Bar, this book is an essential purchase. With its extensive tables of cases, statutes, plus seven appendices, this book is certainly an information-rich resource of research and experience. It proves conclusively the author’s view that ‘most construction projects should start with a dispute board’. Chern also makes the point that the concept of the dispute board can be used or adapted across any number of other industries, including financial services. The publication date of this new and up-to-date third edition is cited as at January 2015.

Sometimes, our home becomes a mess, but with proper organization skills everything can be spic and span. This book set contains 2 books. One of the books leans more on organizing the home. It provides some tips to keeping the house organized at all times as well as a clock method for doing cleaning. The other book is more on making your own shampoo. The wife loves this one more than I do. But in all fairness, it contains a lot of facts about homemade shampoos as well as a number of homemade shampoo recipes. There are even recipes for kids' shampoo. Both books are a treasure to have.

My favorite tip was the one about keeping garbage bags, paper towels, and mats where they are most needed, thus prompting household members to use them. I also like the shampoo book. Suffering from hair loss, I had already switched to sulfate-free store shampoos, and this book has given me some ideas on making my own shampoo at home!

Handmade Christmas Cheer: Festive Holiday Projects to Embroider, Applique, and Quilt, by Pat Wys

Review If you did not get started on your Christmas sewing in July then you need to know there is still plenty of time for you to create those lovely hand-made gifts everyone cherishes. My new favorite book this season is called Handmade Christmas Cheer-Festive Holiday Projects to Embroider, Appliqué, and Quilt by Pat Wys. This book is packed full of smaller projects that you will enjoy working on, yet you still have time to finish them before the crush of the holidays hits. There are 16 projects in the book ranging from stockings, bed and table linens, coaster, place mats, a wreath quilt and a tree skirt to name a few. The 76 holiday embroidery designs... words, phrases and motifs...will add a touch of whimsy and delight to your projects. The appliqué pieces are quite manageable and should go fast. Whether you are looking for a small teacher gift or a special Christmas quilt I know you will find a project in this book that you will enjoy making as well as giving. --The Applique Society Newsletter, Sept/Oct 2015

I am a fool for stockings, as I love to give them as gifts! In addition to the stockings, we can make pillow cases, top sheets, mug rugs, silverware caddies, placemats, napkins, a table runner, a mantel runner, tea towels, a wall hanging, a wreath pillow, coffee cup sleeves, tree skirt, a covering for a candle lamp, and a beautiful 52x72-inch quilt. Most projects are embellished with embroidery, some kind of applique (much of it using wool), and crayon tinting, which works beautifully, is long lasting, and has been around for a long time. The projects that made their way to my list is the reindeer stocking, the Christmas light pillowcases, the mug rugs (wouldn't they make cute potholders?), the table runner (with redwork embroidered text), the tea towels, and the "Home for Christmas" pillow featuring a wreath of holly and cardinals. Wow! I need to get busy! Each project comes with detailed/illustrated instructions and materials required. In addition, there are complete instructions on using crayons for tinting fabric (I recommend buying a separate box of white crayons if you're going to be doing a lot of tinting), cutting and piecing hexagons, and an entire section on hand stitching in the back of the book, which covers: working with wool, recommended threads/floss, needles, fabric preparation, transferring embroidery patterns, pens used for tracing patterns, applique, and embroidery. The embroidery instructions include: running stitch, back stitch, stem stitch, fly stitch, closed fly stitch, Palestrina knot, rosette chain stitch, bullion knot, bullion loop, French knot, couching, satin stitch, lazy daisy stitch, and the star stitch. No worries, all of these stitches have illustrations walking us through them. There are no instructions for finishing the quilted projects, instead there is a website to visit for this free illustrated information. All of the templates/diagrams are full size and the embroidery diagrams are in color.Sprinkled throughout the book are a few of the author's favorite seasonal recipes, including: Cranberry Casserole, Razmosas, Salmon with Brown Sugar and Mustard Glaze, Crab Cakes, Christmas Breakfast Strata, and Super Easy French Toast Casserole.Happy Stitching!

Big ones, small ones, projects for beloved family members, and little gifts for coworkers and neighbors. She makes simple projects, into amazing gifts by spending a little extra time on the hand stitching. There are ample instructions on how to do each stitch, and how to make a project you will love.

The patterns are on sheets of sturdy paper and perforated for easy removal. No more prying open staples to remove patterns. Great photos of projects and the price was the best part!
