About the Author

Tom Avery grew up in Lewisham and trained as a primary teacher at the University of Greenwich. He taught in South London for two years, and then in inner-city Birmingham. He is now co-ordinator of English, Communication and Language at a primary school in Kentish Town, London. He loves working with young people, helping them to develop their interests and encouraging them to think about the world around them. The issues of street crime and unaccompanied refugee children, addressed in Too Much Trouble, affect the lives of many of the children he's met through his work. Avery lives in North London with his wife and young son.

Exclusively British Tone & Resources Limits Usefulness By Janet Perry While this book covering vintage/retro style is long on ideas, it's strong UK bias really lowers the value for North American readers.Yes it has good analysis of design trends for the decades from the 1920's to the 1970's. Yes the pictures are great. Yes it has plenty of good ideas for incorporating this style into your home.But, and since it was originally a UK book it's only to be expected, the british terms and only British resources will make this book harder to use than I would want.I'm glad that the book has a friendly, practicl, non-collectors approach to vintage style. It works as a great illustration. I just wish the publisher had cared enough to fix the language and that the author had taken the chance to provide us with some resources on this side of the Atlantic. While it probably would not have been nearly as comprehensive, with the Internet's resources this could easily have been done.

Approved By Opposites By reading man Both George Orwell and Raymond Williams, not exactly political bedfellows, have a good word to say for this fledgling novel by the great George Gissing.Williams likes it because of the political message, Orwell because it emphasizes Gissings' one and only theme, the effect of lack of money.I like it because as historical reconstruction and moderately gripping fiction it works. Far from Gissing's best, it nevertheless is one of a handful of his novels that readers interested in him shouldn't miss.

One of the best on the subject By Mommy2twins Another outstanding book by Australian publisher that includes the techniques and projects from various embroiderers from around the world. All techniques have step by step photographs as well as the descriptions. Projects feature the supply list of all threads used and the sequence of the work. In the end of the book there are all patterns with stitch directions shown. There are not many books on the market that teach thread painting, they are mostly on Chinese embroidery, but this one is one of the best. You just cannot go wrong with Country Bumpkins publications. They also have a magazine for embroidery lovers called Inspirations that is worth buying as well.

2 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Sad and meaningful, BUT... By A Customer Personally, I believe that this is the greatest work that Holmes wrote. Through Elsie Venner, Holmes tried to oppose Calvin's idea that humans are morally responsible for their inherited flaws, and this is perfectly demonstrated through Elsie's serpentine characteristics and following "humanization" and death. It succeeds in being a forerunner of inherent symbolism in literature, but I feel that the black "mammy" character degrades this book in my eyes, just proving that Holmes was not as great or as original as we would hope. He did not have to stoop to such racism to prove a point or create a meaningful story. Still, his work deserves its rightful accolades.

The cover has a very nice, sturdy feel to it. It was my first purchase from this publisher and if all their books are this nice I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them again.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. elegant and engaging By LilyB The eBay how-to part of the book is smart, funny, and helpful (kitchen taxidermy and dioramas? why didn't I think of that?) but the book is much more than that. It's also a meditation on family and friends, and creating inviting spaces that embrace and warm them, providing the backdrop for relaxed, happy encounters. I love the author's self-deprecating humor and her unexpected metaphors (the living room as turtle terrarium, for instance). The writing is graceful, literary, and entertaining. You don't have to have a house in Nantucket to find something useful, thought provoking, and nostalgia inducing whatever page you happen to land on. Loved it.

Miller Having vacationed in Nantucket for many years as a child, this book brought back many special memories that reminded me that the best times growing up, were in fact, being on Nantucket island each summer. The charming homes in the fishing village in the town of Sconset is the setting for the author's favorite house named Rosemary, where a magical world meshes with reality to take us into her world of growing up as a youngster. The book is a vivid memory of how special that island truly is. Now that we all have the tools of how to navigate Ebay thru Ms. Lefevre's endless devotion to capture the best possible bargains, we can now use all of her tips so that we never have to pay retail again! Thank you for a very funny book with endless resources for those of us who are intimidated by Ebay, and for giving us insight into a very special time in your life! I look forward to relishing my own finds, as I plan on tackling Ebay for this year's Christmas presents for my family!

My only complaint is I wish there was a picture next to each set of instructions. There are pictures but they are grouped together on 3 or 4 pages. The granny squares I made have turned out beautifully.

By Naomi Manygoats I bought this booklet a few years ago, but never got to it, then bought it again the other day looking for granny square patterns... well, it is such a nice resource that I am not too unhappy about that- I will pass on a copy to a friend and make her very happy.I am using square 53 to make an heirloom afghan for my daughter- I love the pattern- it is easy enough to do while following the plot on Desperate Housewives. There were a LOT of really great choices though- I had a hard time deciding which one to do.There are no dimensions given- you are free to pick out whichever type of yarn you would like to use, which of course would drastically change the size of the square- it would have been helpful though to use one common type of yarn and give a size, telling us how many squares are needed to make an afghan. I probably 'messed up' because I am using 2 different colors of squares...thinking I would do 5 across. My husband thinks it should be 6-wide, but that would have the 2 ends in different colors, so it will have to be 7 across....so if you need design tips (as I obviously do) the book '200 Crochet Blocks' might be a better buy.The pictures are in a different place than the pattern- but this is the case in almost all of these Leisure Arts type of instruction booklets so it does not really bother me. The only thing that I disliked about the book though is including triangles and hexagons in a book on SQUARE patterns...if it says 99 Granny Squares there should be 99 4-sided square patterns. I did try several squares- the directions were easy to follow and I did not find any mistakes.

As others have rightfully said, a weak point is that the photos are all gathered together instead of being each alone with the pattern. Also, the size of the square is not given. But there are some really interesting squares (not all are square actually) and there are many well known people who contributed them. The price is right too. For granny lovers this is highly recommended.
