An Oprah's Book Club Selection regarded as one of Faulkner's greatest and most accessible novels, Light in August is a timeless and riveting story of determination, tragedy, and hope. In Faulkner's iconic Yoknapatawpha County, race, sex, and religion collide around three memorable characters searching desperately for human connection and their own identities.

Audie Award-winning narrator Will Patton lends his voice to Light in August. Patton has narrated works by Ernest Hemingway, Don DeLillo, Pat Conroy, Denis Johnson, Larry McMurtry, and James Lee Burke, and brings to this performance a keen understanding of Faulkner, an authentic feel for the South, and a virtuoso narrator's touch.

“His passion is like the current of a surging river, and his performance as authentic and timeless as Faulkner’s Mississippi dirt. A stunning achievement.” ―AudioFile

I read it many years ago and was excited to hear it on a CD-set. It was excellent companionship for my daily walks. It was the story of a seemingly white migrant worker who had `a drop of Negro blood' in his veins, parallel with the story of a young, pregnant white woman who runs after her apparently useless husband-to-be to try to get married. The stories intertwine as the associated racial tones and attitudes play out in early 20th century South.Faulkner, by the way, I believe was ahead of his time in attacking the racial prejudices, and his use of offensive racial epithets in the dialogue give the stories a raw, genuine flare.I am stilled awed by the power and mastery that Faulkner has over the language, even with the fearless punctuation and spelling. He knows how to create a mood while telling a compelling story. His run-on sentences have a purpose!I do have a definite problem with his hopelessly depressing existentialism. You just want to shake some of his central characters out of their malaise, but it does make for some great story-telling.The CD reading was excellent. The recitation was well-acted and directed, and accessible, with different intonations for the different characters. The story is fairly complex, but the tracks are short and you can replay when necessary.I highly recommend it.

Gretz I read Light in August as a 30-something adult, having skipped it over on my summer reading lists during school. I'm glad I waited. This book is way too powerful and complex for a High School mind. Maybe wait until after college too! I am looking forward to the chance to read it again. This book is a massive tour de force, inexplicably underappreciated in American literature. In LIA, Faulkner exhibits throughout the book the ability to lead you exactly where he wants you to go. You feel totally enraptured by his storytelling, and eagerly await his guidance at every turn. There were several occasions where I felt so totally struck by his words, or the turn of the plot, or a characterization, that I just plopped the book down and screamed out lout, "Oh, MAN!!" One of my favorites is when the sherrif discovers a body and says "if she had been able to that alive, she wouldn't be dead now." You'll have to read the book to find out what she was "doing."The book begins with a young woman walking down a dirt road into town. It ends with her riding out of town with a husband. Simple enough, but in between there are 500 pages in which she barely appears!! It's all a whirlwind examination of racism, regret, and the many complexities of the human condition.Pick it up and you won't put it down!!

A GREAT audio version of an American masterpiece By Herman Sutter This is one of Faulkner's masterpieces, along with Sound and Fury and Absalom, Absalom, and Patton reads it with such vigor and character that it comes thrillingly to life. If you want to know why Faulkner is the greatest 20th century American novelist, listen to this. Patton deserves some kind of Nobel Prize for audiobooks for this performance.

Great for markers. Suitable for framing (if you do a good job of coloring). Lots of design variations for color combinations. (I use a blotter page behind the page I'm coloring - protects next page from bleeding.)

I love that because they are abstract, you can add any color anywhere you like and be as creative as you want, and it will always look great. I recommend colored pencils for this book simply because there are some pages with large empty areas that look best if there are neat and tidy lines coloring them in. A great time waster for friends and good for exercising children's creative minds.

Brooklyn is dead. Long live the Bronx! In Bitter Bronx, Jerome Charyn returns to his roots and leads the literary renaissance of an oft-overlooked borough in this surprising new collection.

In Bitter Bronx, one of our most gifted and original novelists depicts a world before and after modern urban renewal destroyed the gritty sanctity of a land made famous by Ruth, Gehrig, and Joltin' Joe.

Bitter Bronx is suffused with the texture and nostalgia of a lost time and place, combining a keen eye for detail with Jerome Charyn's lived experience. These stories are informed by a childhood growing up near that middle-class mecca, the Grand Concourse; falling in love with three voluptuous librarians at a public library in the Lower Depths of the South Bronx; and eating at Mafia-owned restaurants along Arthur Avenue's restaurant row, amid a "land of deprivation…where fathers trundled home…with a monumental sadness on their shoulders."

In "Lorelei," a lonely hearts grifter returns home and finds his childhood sweetheart still living in the same apartment house on the Concourse; in "Archy and Mehitabel" a high school romance blossoms around a newspaper comic strip; in "Major Leaguer" a former New York Yankee confronts both a gang of drug dealers and the wreckage that Robert Moses wrought in his old neighborhood; and in three interconnected stories―"Silk & Silk," "Little Sister," and "Marla"―Marla Silk, a successful Manhattan attorney, discovers her father's past in the Bronx and a mysterious younger sister who was hidden from her, kept in a fancy rest home near the Botanical Garden. In these stories and others, the past and present tumble together in Charyn's singular and distinctly "New York prose, street-smart, sly, and full of lurches" (John Leonard, New York Times).

Throughout it all looms the "master builder" Robert Moses, a man who believed he could "save" the Bronx by building a highway through it, dynamiting whole neighborhoods in the process. Bitter Bronx stands as both a fictional eulogy for the people and places paved over by Moses' expressway and an affirmation of Charyn's "brilliant imagination" (Elizabeth Taylor, Chicago Tribune).

Bitter Bronx: Thirteen Stories, by Jerome Charyn

Review “A borough native wrestles with con men, gangsters and the biggest villain of all―Robert Moses…. One is left with no doubt that Jerome Charyn’s shriek, his war cry, his own peculiar music, was born [in the Bronx].” (Abraham Socher - Wall Street Journal)“[Jerome Charyn] is to the Bronx what Saul Bellow, early in his career, was to Upper Broadway―bard, celebrant, mythologizer.” (Jonathan Yardley - Washington Post)“Sharp-edged short stories…Charyn’s narrative sleight of hand is wonderfully at play…. Despite the hard edges, and there are many, a rich sweetness flows just below the surface of Bitter Bronx.” (Wendell Jamieson - New York Times Book Review)“It is no small achievement to be the Babel of the Bronx.” (Leslie Epstein - New York Times Book Review)“[T]here are certain constants in Charyn’s work: an energetic, urbane prose, a playful approach to narrative, a fascination with history, and a downbeat, noir-ish perspective. This fatalistic outlook coexists comfortably with the ebullient verve and propulsion of his prose…. Whether writing about Yiddish theatre or silent film or movie palaces or old Bronx neighborhoods, Charyn is the curator, celebrant, and mourner of lost worlds…. The prose impresses with its accumulation of apt details, fresh diction, and serpentine syntax…. Is Charyn truly a romantic or a trickster? Hard to say on the basis of these entertaining stories: probably both. They are written with confidence, fluidity, mischievous aplomb, and a lifetime’s worth of acquired literary skill. A light ironic touch peeps through these tales of doomed passion, as though the septuagenarian Charyn were mocking his own former searching for a movie-type love, his previous ‘constant adolescence’ of hungering for dream women.” (Phillip Lopate - New York Review of Books)“In this collection of stories, Charyn’s characters leave blighted streets only to boomerang back to a part of New York ‘in permanent recession.’ With echoes of Walt Whitman’s fantastical city and the hard-broiled territory of Mickey Spillane, Bitter Bronx elevates the borough’s stoops and sidewalks into the realm of myth.” (O Magazine)“Jerome Charyn is one of the most important writers in American literature.” (Michael Chabon)“Jerome Charyn is merely one of our finest writers, with a polymorphous imagination and crack comic timing. Whatever milieu he chooses to inhabit, his characters sizzle with life, and his sentences are pure vernacular music, his voice unmistakable.” (Jonathan Lethem)“Memories and imagination mingle to particularly edgy and bewitching effect in [Charyn’s] Bronx fables, which echo the Jewish gangster stories in The Odessa Tales by Isaac Babel…. Charyn’s dark, sexy, droll, and lacerating urban folktales of gangster tyranny, thwarted desire, and desperate measures are wizardly and bittersweet.” (Donna Seaman - Booklist, Starred review)“Charyn, like Nabokov, is that most fiendish sort of writer―so seductive as to beg imitation, so singular as to make imitation impossible.” (Tom Bissell)“Jerome Charyn's Bronx is a landscape of magic and passion. With…American yearning and a stage full of unforgettable characters.” (BookPage)“Grifters, gangs, vamps, and lost souls pursue gritty lives in ‘the brick wilderness of the Bronx’ in this collection of tales by a veteran storyteller and native of the New York borough…. Charyn's staccato style is full of jolts, surprising observations, and turns of phrase. It works well with the rough struggle for survival and success….” (Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review)“Tough on the outside but tender at heart, the 13 stories in this volume serve as a nostalgic elegy to the Bronx of the past…. Mixing equal parts grit and charm, there’s no need to have set foot in the Bronx to enjoy these stories.” (Publishers Weekly)“With an almost breathless style, Charyn gives readers compelling characters who are restless, reckless and desperate…. Every single tale here is short, brutal, harrowing, heartbreaking, mesmerizing and altogether unforgettable.” (Sarah Rachel Egelman - Bookreporter.com)“Charyn constructs hella work, powerful images in condensed language. While some stories are set in the near or distant past, others feel timeless to the point of taking place just yesterday.” (Douglas Lord - Library Journal)

When I first read one of his novels several years ago, I found that I needed to acquire a taste for his writing style. It took some effort but it was worth persevering. His storytelling style in this collection is best described as picaresque: the plot is often episodic rather than unfolding in a linear manner and many of the characters are likeable rogues in a corrupt society. One of the most distinctive traits of Charyn's writing is how he uses language. In his interview regarding his novel Johnny One-eye on my blog, Ascroft, eh? he said that he grew up in the Bronx having no language. He had no idea newspapers such as the New York Times existed. His friendship with several librarians in a South Bronx library introduced him to the world of words and literature. From these early encounters, he developed a love of words, which fostered his own unique writing style. Often his prose seems to ramble along, tumbling together his characters' thoughts as well as the unfolding action. His descriptions of people and places are vivid, aided by unusual metaphors and ornate language. Characters and settings seem to interest Charyn more than the plot of the story. His characters are always unusual, often beguiling but with dark currents never too far beneath the surface. They are diverse, each with a unique, captivating voice. Like other aspects of his work, his characters are rarely straightforward. They are complex, motivated by a plethora of values and desires that often war with each other. They are also duplicitous with each other and the reader, leaving the reader wondering what to believe in the narrative. Place is important in Charyn's writing and nowhere more so than in this collection of stories. Set in the Bronx, these stories are conjured from the writer's memories of his boyhood home and, no doubt, this helps to bring the place to life. The stories are mainly set in 1940s gangster run New York City, a world of violence and opulence with a moral code all its own. They evoke this place and time vividly and fondly. Despite the brutality of the criminal underworld, it is a place of lavish excess and vitality. The place and the people are larger than life. In my interview with Charyn regarding Johnny One-eye, he said, "Fiction often has a greater truth than most historical texts...Novelists see history as story. We're not burdened by `inaccuracies'." I think this is how the reader should approach Charyn's short story collection: suspend disbelief and enjoy the language that spills onto the page and the world the author creates. Charyn's writing style may not appeal to every reader but it is worth giving it a try to discover the delights of his stories.Note: I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

McCann Having previously reviewed UNDER THE EYE OF GOD by Jerome Charyn, I was already aware of the intense hold that the Bronx of his childhood has on his imagination. As he writes in the "Author's Note" to BITTER BRONX: I realized that I had been shaped as a writer not with the words I didn’t have, not with lavish pencil cases, not with library books I had never borrowed, but with some ghost’s vocabulary. I’d filled that amorphous void of the South Bronx with my own imagination. There is both nostalgia and comedy in BITTER BRONX, and it is written in Charyn's lyrical prose that speaks of eyes bleeding “the viscous color of tears” and of Jackson Pollock's paintings “with their lashing rhythm, as if colors could cry out," to give only two examples of his lyricism. The thirteen stories in this book are populated by an exotic blend of characters who surprise us with their eccentricities at the same time as they touch us with their unrequited love, losses, and thwarted dreams. There is Lorelei, who lives with her father in a Bronx apartment, never able to move beyond its sad confines. There is the story of Adonis, which is particularly poignant in its depiction of the lonely mob widows who are never able to feel loved once again. There are three stories of the Silks, reminiscent of Salinger's fictional and dysfunctional families. In “The Major Leaguer,” we are reminded of Charyn's abiding interest in the players of a lost era of greatness who emerged from the Bronx such as Joe DiMaggio, the subject of Charyn's book, Joe Dimaggio: The Long Vigil. And, in the background, as in Under the Eye of God, outside forces conspire to destroy the author's beloved Bronx through development and land grabs. The shadow of Robert Moses is felt in each of these stories, a man who created a highway that irrevocably divided the Bronx into north and south.BITTER BRONX will appeal to fans of Charyn's Isaac Sidel series, short story lovers in general, and those readers seeking a refreshing book with unconventional prose and colorful characters brought lovingly to life.

If not, then give Jerome Charyn credit for creating a new genre. I call Charyn’s book of short stories, “Gothic” because his thirteen stories tell of weird, comic characters involved in melodramatic situations that will raise your eyebrows, or twist your lips into a smirk. I think I might have even guffawed at one of the “Silk” stories.Charyn’s stories bring you to a “mecca of middle-class Jews,” “Mafioso restaurants”, and up to the Grand Concourse. A grifter gigolo named Howell is surprised to find love in Lorelei. Another gigolo whose modeling name was Adonis is good at dining widows. The kids at Music and Art had a cockroach who writes poetry and a companion, alley cat, who thought she was Cleopatra. They are named Archy and Mehitabel. Then there’s the bisexual in The Cat Lady’s Kiss. My favorite stories were the three stories about the Silk family: Silk & Silk, Little Sister, and Marla. The reader gets drawn into this melodramatic soap opera life of the Silks. The characterization must have reminded me of some people I know because these stories are my favorite. Then we continue with Dee who tried to help the gentle giant, Eddie. There was a homeless man in love with Princess Hannah. A poetry teacher who made me wonder if the author was projecting himself in Milo’s Last Chance. An orphan who lucked out in Alice’s Eyes. A New York Yankees’ twenty-fifth man, who became the secret lover of a hospital administrator, in Major Leaguer. Lastly, a dangerous female ex-con in White Trash, who exhibited psychopathic behavior. These thirteen stories will hold you tight and then release you to breathe. And think. You’ll be wondering and thinking of the Silks, and crazy characters, and colorful situations, for quite a while. Jerome Charyn’s Bitter Bronx is quite a tour. I enjoyed it. I think you will, too. I received a free copy of Bitter Bronx by Jerome Charyn from Tribute Book, but no other compensation was received, and my review is my honest evaluation.

No woodworking project is more fun to make than a box. Requiring little material and offering lots of challenges, making a wooden box results in a satisfyingly functional project that is proudly used and displayed or given as a gift that will be cherished for years. It’s no wonder boxes rank as the most popular woodworking project by beginners and advanced craftsman alike. David Picciuto, aka The Drunken Woodworker, is a huge fan of making boxes, especially with his trusty bandsaw. His Bandsaw Box You Tube videos and his Weekly Woodworking Round-up are must see viewing among the woodworking community. In his first book, The New Bandsaw Box Book: Technqiues and Patterns for the Modern Woodworker, David presents a collection of beautiful boxes that can be easily made with a bandsaw, considered by most woodworkers as the most important, versatile, and easy to use stationary tool in the workshop. Each project is captured in a modern and fresh step-by-step style that makes learning easy while David’s engaging manner keeps the information accessible and light. In keeping with the younger, artisan mindset that is infiltrating the woodworking community, David concludes with his “raises a glass” toast that matches the perfect craft beer to compliment the wood and style of each completed project.

Finally...a woodworking book that's clean, simple, and easy to follow with great looking projects. I don't need 200 pages to learn how to make a box (...and these are all good looking, by the way.) This is a great go-to book that will get you jump started on making something on your bandsaw...and with Christmas coming, I will be making quite a few. Also, I really like the "Raise a Glass" section at the end of each project!
