Protecting animals has been an integral part of the author's life, so when she came upon an injured cat at the University in Tehran, she had to take action. Since animals are not treated with the same reverence in Iran as in the United States, Ms. Dadashi had to deftly work around cultural barriers. She learned these skills at an early age from her European mother, who shines as a compassionate role model in the second chapter, "Hassan and Claude." The last two chapters reflect Ms. Dadashi's experiences in America and how women there handle romantic relationships and chance encounters. The illuminating cover was done by the talented Ben Garrison (www.bengarrison.com).

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A moving collection of tales from Tehran By M.J. McDermott A moving collection of stories that I found powerful. Alieh Dadashi is a gifted writer with a powerful way of telling a story and bringing the reader into the tale. After reading this collection of just a few stories, I found myself wanting more. The title story, in particular, was beautiful. I especially loved her description of how residents of Tehran structure their days to avoid the oppressive heat. And her concern for the injured and disfigured cat was emotional -- I'm not sure she meant it as a metaphor, but it made me feel pain for the country of Iran. Keep on writing Ms. Dadashi!
