About the Author Sophie McManus was born in New York City and is a graduate of Vassar College and Sarah Lawrence College's MFA program. She is a recipient of fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, the Saltonstall Foundation, and the Jentel Foundation. Her work has appeared in American Short Fiction and Tin House, among other publications. The Unfortunates is her first book.

19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. The Unfortunates By gerryb Lately I’ve found that too many page turners manipulate me. I want to find out what happens but don’t actually enjoy reading the book. Finishing becomes an unpleasant compulsion. This is a page turner in which every page is sheer delight. The writing is exquisite as are the plot and character development. There are three main characters. Ce Ce is a very wealthy philanthropist who discovers she may be dying of a serious illness. George, CeCe’s son is a brilliantly developed cross between Frasier Crane and the brilliant Hitchcock/ Patricia Highsmith character Bruno Anthony from “Strangers on a Train”. Georges wife Iris is perhaps the most sympathetic character. She is an innocent , plunging into the dysfunction of Georges family. The first two thirds are brilliant in their sardonic wit and excruciating psychological violence. The book edges slowly to a dark yet elegiac conclusion. It ends with pathos replacing satire. Sophie McManus is a writer of breathtaking virtuosity. This is a terrific achievement, especially for for a first novel.

And sometimes all in the same sentence.I loved this book and it might be my favorite read of the year. Contemporary fiction category at least (you have categories too, right?).Exploring excess and the hubris it can often prompt, McManus is masterful as she never once loosens the screws she puts to her characters. Outrageous and yet endearing. I found myself not liking the characters really but loving to read about them. There is schadenfreude and there is empathy and in end I was plenty entertained. McManus not so much giving me the ending I wanted, but the right ending to a rollicking social adventure that I found rather timely and yet very likely to use this glimpse of time and place in a way that will prove ageless.I look forward to whatever she writes in the future.
