ADAM Architecture has a worldwide reputation for traditional Western design. Although the practice is based in the UK, it has built award-winning projects of all types around the world, and is known for combining modern interpretations of the Classical tradition with the latest technology. Among its most admired work are its country houses, and 19 of these houses are the focus of this new book, written by architectural historian Jeremy Musson.Robert Adam co-founded the practice (as Winchester Design) in 1986, and has worked with technical director Paul Hanvey for more than 30 years (including at a previous incarnation of the practice). Adam now works with three other architect-directors – Nigel Anderson, Hugh Petter and George Saumarez Smith – to build country houses that are not period reproductions but creative interpretations of past traditions. Each director has his own architectural personality, together producing a body of work that uses historical precedents, including construction techniques, materials, layout and details, to give expression to thoroughly modern works. Their schemes address the modern-day realities of energy conservation, climate control, internet access, computer-managed systems and security – all prerequisites in contemporary house design. Unlike country houses of the past, today’s houses must be functional without live-in staff. Kitchens are now the focus of much family life and entertaining, rather than spaces to be kept from sight. These and numerous other practical considerations receive meticulous attention in an ADAM Architecture country house. The book begins with two forewords, with Clive Aslet and Calder Loth offering their interpretations of the ideal country house from a British and an American perspective respectively. The introduction provides an overview of the rich and varied tradition of the English country house, from the medieval manor house to houses of the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, and the Classically inspired designs of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries through to the architecture of the Gothic Revival and then the Arts and Crafts Movement. Architects associated with the country house throughout the ages include, among others, John Vanburgh, William Chambers, Robert Adam, John Nash and Sir Edwin Lutyens. And now, today, ADAM Architecture is one of the leading practices designing and building new country houses.

Though the median size of a new single-family house is back on the rise--after a brief decline during the 2007-2009 U.S. recession--many are now choosing to live small deliberately. They're building smaller, more environmentally and economically friendly homes. The New Small House presents small-house design strategies as well as whole-house case studies from across the U.S. and Canada for homeowners eager to simplify, and remodelers, builders, architects, and designers looking for inspiration.

The ingenious and attractive designs of these 24 small houses (ranging in size from 500 square feet to 1640 square feet) suit young families, independent couples, single folks and those entering retirement. The houses are categorized by their location, from waterside gems to city dwellings and include new construction and renovations featured in 275 beautiful color photographs and 30 illustrations. The introduction defines 10 time-tested small-house design strategies, like borrowed view and daylight, multipurpose spaces, outdoors in and indoors out, pockets for privacy and more. And a bonus chapter includes five small retreats --each less than 500 square feet--in the backyard and beyond that exemplify, in even smaller packages, many of the same design strategies portrayed by the case-study houses.

For those longing for a simpler life, a small house may be right for you. The New Small House can get you started today.

Middleton My copy of The New Small House is already filled with sticky notes--so many great ideas to tuck away for a (future) little house design. If you're even remotely interested in the current trend towards building smaller with smarter designs, you will love architect-writer Katie Hutchison's lucid and practical advice as well as the particular houses she chose to showcase. I love that many of the designs have a clean and contemporary feel, while many still incorporate traditional or regional architecture. I also love that each house not only has a design plan (floor plan drawing) with it, but enough beautiful photographs to really get a sense of how the design plays out. Additionally each of the photographs is tagged with an icon representing one of Hutchison's 10 key small-house design strategies, so again, the beautiful and the practical come together to inform you without overwhelming you.

If you are, or think you ever may be, interested in living small, this collection of abodes and the stories of the people who created them will inspire you. It provides glimpses of the high motivation required to conjure a comfortable small building concept, the requisite drive and grit to realize that dream, and finally, the pride that often attends its completion.Buy this book to remember the essential, artful nature of efficient, thoughtful shelter.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. What's a Small House Anyway? By Dinkydoright This is a beautiful book and, though I had a moment of doubt, I'm keeping it. Why the hesitation? It's the only complaint I have with some of the books in this category ... what makes a "small" or "tiny" house? These beautiful pages and pictures show spacious and refined spaces. Well of course. Most of these houses are over 1200 square feet. Those are not small houses! And all of them address one or two people occupancy which makes the space to my thinking generous beyond small.I currently live in a 1250 square foot Craftsman. The house has two nice size bedrooms, one even has an additional walk-in closet. And of course I have a foyer, living room, formal dining room, a nursery or office, bathroom, mud room along with a kitchen with a breakfast nook and pantry. This house may not be a McMansion but it does not qualify as a small house. I live in a lot of space, wonderful space and for a long time felt overwhelmed by how little of the house I actually inhabited. In my mind and in the better books in this category, a small house does not exceed 1000 square feet. Then the challenge of space well used becomes real. Then the ideas and decorating often show ingenuity and resourcefulness. Then I find real and useful if not inspiring material. Especially when it comes to how much space I actually need.Having said that, this is an entertaining and beautiful book. Of course my favorite houses are the smaller ones, especially the several entitled 20k Houses. The incorporation of unexpected materials such as plywood with a metallic finish also is interesting and dramatic. Some of the window designs are also exceptional ways to make more use of light and views. But lofts aren't particularly well designed or original. So I'll keep the book but encourage you to look at other books in this category. I've reviewed all the ones I've purchased and will add here why my love of this category. It's quite simple. My house is larger than I need for the one of me and I wanted to use the space better before I went in search of a roommate. Add to this my attached 850 square foot cottage which I don't want to rent. Instead I learned from one book to consider it my "mountain cabin getaway" without the long drive to get out of the Bay Area. My success in accomplishment of all this is directly related to what I've learned from the better books on small and tiny houses. Perhaps you will find equal reward from the better books in this category while this book can provide a few ideas for extra polish.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great little book By Amazon Customer What a terrific little book. A short, precise guide on the things you need to keep sane when there are bucket loads of disorder around you. Highly recommended.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not great By Cheryl Cabrera This should be titled the Tidy Desk. Nothing really in here for how to organize files, what to keep and how long or how to create a functional space. It is very short, probably one small paragraph per page. and 1/5 of the book is made up of quotes. That's one quote per page in large font. This should be no more than $.99

A Chicago Tribune, Electric Literature, and BookRiot Best Book of the Year A National Book Foundation "5 Under 35" AuthorMarie is a waitress at an upscale Dallas steakhouse, attuned to the appetites of her patrons and gifted at hiding her private struggle as a young single mother behind an easy smile and a crisp white apron. It’s a world of long hours and late nights, and Marie often gives in to self-destructive impulses, losing herself in a tangle of bodies and urgent highs as her desire for obliteration competes with a stubborn will to survive. Pulsing with a fierce and feral energy, Love Me Back is an unapologetic portrait of a woman cutting a precarious path through early adulthood and the herald of a powerful new voice in American fiction.

Love Me Back, by Merritt Tierce

Review “Brilliant, devastating. . . . Love Me Back is one of those exquisitely rare novels that feel desperate and urgent and absolutely necessary." —The New York Times Book Review“A gorgeous, dirty razor of prose—sharp and dangerous and breathtaking. This is a defiant story about a young woman choosing the life and motherhood that is best for her, without apology.” —Roxane Gay, author of Bad Feminist“A heart-cracking read.” —The Chicago Tribune “Breathtaking, addictive, sexy, raw and honest. . . . My favorite debut of the year.” —Jami Attenberg, author of The Middlesteins "A prayer to everything broken, vulnerable, and human" —BookRiot“So ferocious, so powerful, so fearlessly told, that by the end I felt as though the wind had been knocked out of me. Even now I have the urge to walk down the street and give a copy to everyone I pass, pressing it into their hands, telling them, "Read this. Read it now." Love Me Back is that brilliant and that necessary.” —Cristina Henriquez, author of The Book of Unknown Americans “Hard to put down.”  —The Dallas Morning News “Tierce’s prose possesses the force, bluntness and surprise of a sucker punch. . . . One of my favorite books of the last few years.” —Carrie Brownstein, co-creator of Portlandia  "More or less tore my scalp off" —Tom Nissley, The Millions “Unforgettable.” —Entertainment Weekly “Absolutely enthralling from first word to last. . . . One of the most vital books about our invisible underclass I've read in years.” —Claire Vaye Watkins, author of Battleborn "One of the year's most beautiful books" —The Dallas Observer “A staggeringly fine novel.” —Ben Fountain, author of Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk“Exceptional. . . . Tierce’s writing reflects the plot's quick, sinuous turns.” —The Huffington Post“A compulsively readable yet highly literary novel. . . . Announces Tierce as a writer we’ve been waiting for much too long.” —Oxford American“One of the most mesmerizing heroines in recent fiction. . . . A compulsively readable tale [that] threatens to drag Texas literature kicking and screaming into the twenty-first century.” —Texas Monthly“Will floor you. [Tierce’s] sentences, poetic at times, are honest, dirty, sexy, and at times, tragic. . . . A completely unique reading experience.” —Bustle“(A) sexy, honest debut.” —Marie Claire “Tierce writes with a visceral, unsentimental directness.” —The New Yorker “Tierce’s prose is a shock to the system. . . . It also feels original, a voice from below that we haven't heard before, that hasn't had the temerity to speak up until now.” —Texas Observer “Sad and dirty and beautifully written novel. . . . Merritt Tierce is a hell of a writer.  Believe me, after reading this book, you will never look at your waitress in quite the same way again.” —Donald Ray Pollock, author of The Devil All the Time

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. The Olive GardenI'm a hard worker, I tell the manager. We are sitting in a booth. His name is Rajiv George and he is short and portly and has kind eyes. He laughs often. Great, he says. In a restaurant that's really all you need. We'll teach you everything else.Does that mean I'm hired? I ask. The Olive Garden is the fourth restaurant to interview me. I filled out applications at thirteen.I think so, he laughs. Congratulations. Are you sure you don't want a breadstick? He gestures at the basket of fluffy wands between us on the table. They glisten with garlic butter. No thank you, I say. I ate earlier.Well, you could use some meat on your bones. He twinkles so I try to twinkle back. Employees can have as much bread and soda as they want, he says.Okay, I say. When do I start? Now? he asks. It's only three thirty. You can learn how to make salads and help out tonight. The salad girl called in sick. Word to the wise, if you're gonna call in, do it as early as possible. Actually--the wise don't call in. Find someone to cover the shift. Right, Kendall? He says this to a tall, stunning man who walks past the booth, then pauses to tie on a black apron with three pockets across the front. His white shirt is unbuttoned and I see a leather necklace with a pewter cross that hangs so it just touches the beginning of his chest fur, visible over the top edge of a wife-beater. His sleeves are rolled up and he has snakes tattooed around both forearms.Right, boss, he says. Who's this?He is facing Mr. George, but means me. He pops up his collar and buttons the top button, then takes a blue tie out of one of his apron pockets and ties it with quick aggressive movements. There is a grease spot he is careful to hide within the knot. This is Marie, says Mr. George. She's new.No shit, says Kendall. How old is she? Twelve?Excuse him, says Mr. George. He was in Desert Storm.I was in fourth grade during Desert Storm but I don't say this. I won a lot of mental math competitions that year including the regional title and I didn't pay attention to the news. But we had to write letters to the soldiers, and the math team coach made us tie yellow ribbons on our competition pencils. Kendall extends his right hand to me while rolling down the sleeve with his left.Christopher Kendall, he says. Marie, I say, shaking his hand. It is warm and dry and strong. He has a silver Celtic knot ring on his thumb. You ain't got a last name, Cabbage Patch?Cut it out, Mr. George says to Christopher. I just hired her, don't run her off yet. At least not before she fills in for the salad girl tonight.Young, I say to Christopher. Yes you are, he says. Did you give her the tour? he asks Mr. George. No, says Mr. George. Are you volunteering? Don't think it gets you out of opening sidework. Why do you think I want a little helper? says Christopher, and to me, Come on, doll, I'll show you around.Don't forget what we talked about last night, says Mr. George as we walk away from the booth toward the swing door that leads into the kitchen.Fuck your mother, Apu, Christopher says under his breath. Raj is harmless, he says to me. But don't eat the bread or you'll wind up like him and that would be tragic. He gives me a blatant up-and-down as he says tragic. This is the back station, he says. We are standing in front of a soda machine and a computer screen. He continues, By the bar is the front station. Over in the twenties is the side station. Back station is safest. Ring at the bar and somebody's gonna ask you for change, or when the dingbat hostess leaves the door you'll end up seating. Side station is right between two big-tops so somebody is bound to need something, and there's always a fucking kid throwing crayons on the floor. Parents think you're a prick if you don't stop everything and pick em up for Johnny. Nobody can see you here.Okay, I say. He takes a clear plastic cup from a stack by the soda machine and plunges it into the ice. Plastic for us, glass for them, he says. Always use the ice scoop. Georgie sees you doing this you'll get yelled at. It's unsanitary. Plus if you break a glass in the ice we have to burn it. Where is the ice scoop? I ask. Fuck if I know, he says. He fills his cup with Mountain Dew and takes a straw wrapped in paper from a cardboard box on the stainless-steel shelf above the soda machine. He tears the paper about an inch from the top of the straw, throwing away the long part and leaving the short part on like a cap. He stabs the straw into the cup. This is how you serve a soda, he says. Make sure it's full. Fuckers drink it like it's fucking crack. Put a straw in it. Leave the top on the straw so they know you didn't put your nasty paws all over where their mouth goes. Always have extra straws in your apron because some lazy asshole in the section next to you won't give his people straws, and when you walk by they'll ask you for one, and if you don't have one you gotta find dipshit or get it yourself. He takes the paper cap off the straw and flicks it into the trash. The fizzing head on the soda has settled so he tops it off and then takes a big suck. I recommend a straw for your personal consumption as well, he says. Never put your mouth on anything in a restaurant if you can help it. Shit doesn't get clean. Ever.Okay, I say. Yo, is that all you say? he asks. No, I say, but I'm here to work. He raises his eyebrows at this and says, Oh! He looks around. She's here to work, he says to another server who walks by with a gray plastic tub of silverware. Great, says the other server, I need help with these rollups.Sorry, Dave, I called her first, says Christopher. This way, honey. He takes my elbow and guides me toward the kitchen. Dave's a faggot, but he's a good guy, he says. I heard that, says Dave.Outside the kitchen door hangs a broom and dustpan. There's the broom, says Christopher. Somebody breaks a glass use it. Don't pick it up with your hands. Tell one of the busboys you're busy and make them do it.He kicks open the kitchen door and points up at a circular mirror hanging from the ceiling. Coming out, check that or you'll knock somebody down and then people will think you're stupid. Going in, look through the window. First time you bump a tray out of somebody's hands is not gonna be pleasant for you, or them, and if it's me you're doing all my sidework for a week. Trays, tray jacks, he says, gesturing toward a stack of big brown ovals and wooden stands with black nylon straps. You can carry a tray, right?I don't know, I say. He gives me his full attention for the first time. Wait, he says. You ever worked in a restaurant before? No, I say. I fucking knew it, he says, I could tell the second I saw you. He shakes his head slowly, looking around the kitchen. A skinny boy in a white coat is chopping onions. He looks up at us. A tear slides down his nose and he raises his shoulder to rub it off. Don't cry, Jose, don't cry, says Christopher. Jose says I'm sorry, Chris, it's just so sad how ugly your mom is, but Christopher doesn't answer because another server comes into the kitchen through the door at the opposite end. Sup Chris, says the new server, then Sup Kelly, Tare-Bear to two women who are standing in a corner talking while they do their makeup. Hey Josh, says Christopher, guess what we got here. Josh is punching in on the time clock by the office. Mr. George sticks his head out and says Don't punch in unless you're working. I'm working, I'm working, says Josh. What do we got, Chris?A fucking virgin, everybody. Chris grabs my hand and yanks it up into the air like I won a boxing match. This is Marie, and today's her first day in a restaurant. Welcome to hell, baby. He laughs a sadistic laugh. He has beautiful beautiful teeth. I pull my hand down and look toward the office but Mr. George is on the phone, his back to us.Don't look at him, says Christopher. You gotta make it with us. He don't know shit about how to wait tables.I nod. I know, I say, I was just looking at the clock.Uh-huh, says Christopher. There's only two times in a restaurant: before and after. You walk in, you white-knuckle it, try not to fuck up till it's over and then it's over. You made money or you didn't.God, leave her alone, Chris, says one of the women. Ignore him, she says to me. He's so full of himself it's disgusting.Christopher walks toward her so I follow him. What's disgusting, Tara, he says softly, is how full of me you'd like to be. Fuck off, says Kelly. Tara yells toward the office, Raj, Chris is harassing me again! but then both women start giggling. Don't worry, sweetie, Kelly says. He's all talk. That's not what she said last night, says Christopher. Kelly rolls her eyes. Fine, you win, she says. I would rather fuck myself with an OG bread stick but you can pretend if you want.Don't believe anything he says, she tells me as she pushes open the kitchen door with her back, pulling her hair up into a ponytail. How old are you, anyway, asks Christopher, leading us into a humid room off the kitchen where a man in a plastic apron says Hola. He is using a big nozzle on a spring to spray some large metal pans in a deep sink. This is the dish pit, yells Christopher over the noise of the water and the clanking of the pans. And watch out, they haven't put down the mats yet. You got good shoes? He leans over and pinches my pant leg away from my knee, lifting the hem so he can see my black canvas sneakers. He has three fingers behind my knee, and when he closes his hand his thumb is so high up on my inseam I look at him to see what it means. He looks at me back and squeezes as he says Those won't work. You need some nonslip soles or you'll wind up on your ass wearing cannelloni. Payless in the mall has some cheap ones.I'll be eighteen in two weeks, I say, adding a year. He whistles. He puts an arm around my shoulder and yells at the dishwasher, pointing at me with his other hand, Hey Jose, es una bambina!Stop, I say. What? he says. I just said you're a babe. I know what you said, I say. Ella hablas espanol tambien, he yells at Jose. No me llamo Jose, says the dishwasher. He sticks out a wet red hand. Mario, he says. Marie, I say, shaking his hand. Ah, Maria! he says. Somos gemelos! I smile. Mucho gusto, I say. Come on, says Christopher, enough fucking around. Let's get to work. The third man I'd ever had sex with was an ex-corrections officer who is six-four and the most gorgeous man I've ever seen or ever will. It may seem rash to hand out that superlative to someone I met as a teenager, but perfection cannot be perfected. His teeth were perfectly square, even, and white, his smile dazzling beneath thick blue-black hair, his eyes a brilliant unseen color of bottle green backlit with navy, his olive skin so smooth and taut it made you feel that if you closed your eyes you might be his, you might be somewhere else. In the restaurant where we worked, he would take four crates of clean glasses from the dish machine, stack them, and balance them above his shoulder with one arm to bring them into the kitchen. I could barely lift two to chest level using my whole body. But there was no bulk, he was just on the solid side of lean. The strength in him was panther-dark and menacing and in spite of the ordinary green lines across the toes of his dress socks I was too scared of him to get wet. He fucked me anyway, with a giant penis I couldn't bring myself to look at. I was like a child, I was quiet and tense and bit my tongue and lip to keep silent when he pulled out and ground himself to a sterile stop on me. Pushing through every layer of sensitive tissue and fat to pin me to the bed, he succeeded in giving himself an orgasm, avoiding ejaculation, controlling his breathing, and keeping his face composed. He made no sound and took no notice of me--I knew of his completion only through the ripples against my mons. Later when I put my hand on his on the gearshift on the way back to the restaurant he said from behind his aviators Do you know what the words No one mean. Three weeks later he was fired in the middle of a shift for harassing the underage salad girl and I had to take over his tables.I think he could tell I was pregnant the day we did it. I don't think he cared. I begged him to fuck me. I followed him around the restaurant, touching him. I stood next to him when we sang Buona Festa. I didn't even know how to fuck. It was four months then but I still didn't show through my clothes at five, or six and a half. At seven I had to move the apron down to my hips. I worked there until she was born.We went back to the restaurant together that day because we were both between doubles. I know that's what we did but I forget that. It seems like I stayed on the bed and he left. I see myself naked. I hadn't touched my belly yet. I never looked at it. Christopher didn't answer my phone calls. I started calling him that night after work but he never answered. I called him all the time. I knew he wouldn't answer but then I would be calling him without even knowing why or what I would say. In the restaurant he'd say Hey if I said Hey Christopher but he never said my name and he ignored me. I see myself on the bed naked calling him. Christopher. Christopher. If he would just answer I would touch my belly.

43 of 47 people found the following review helpful. as there are many good books that don't have a standard plot By K I bought this book not knowing what to expect, and it blew me away. The author's prose is tight and substantive. I'm surprised at how many stunned reviewers keep complaining about a lack of plot, as there are many good books that don't have a standard plot. This is a glimpse into the life of Marie -- her imperfections, her struggles, her self-destructive behavior, her attempts at gaining insight into herself and the people around her. Tierce uses outstanding prose throughout. Yes, she employs some pretty raunchy words, but I really can't understand all the pearl-clutching from other reviewers who are so shocked. This is life, people. It's messy, and people behave in ways that defy explanation, but set aside your attempt to judge the protagonist and just appreciate the bold, honesty. My favorite sentence from the book: "Whatever is in me that makes decisions is now full of an accretion of plaque, the chalky consequence of, paradoxically, so many hollow moments."It's a worthwhile and daring read.

32 of 36 people found the following review helpful. We all need to know Marie. By actup67 Tierce's words cut to the soul in the always-searching, but never-quite-finding, young mother and waitress, Marie. This is a snapshot of a girl trying to find herself in a culture that has given her nothing but tired and dangerous cliches of womanhood from which to draw. Tierce creates a portrait of loss and struggle that is almost unbearable at times, so honest and unapologetic it is in capturing those moments, those choices and non-choices, that come to define us, and against which we work to redefine a different, better, more whole picture of ourselves. Not for the faint of heart, Love a Me Back is a groundbreaking first novel from a wildly talented feminist voice that is sorely lacking in literary fiction today.

24 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Addictive, fast-paced, and enjoyable By Ashley Davidson An addictive, fast-paced, and enjoyable read, conversational, unflinching, and unpretentious. Impossible to put down--had to get up and move the book to another room to keep from reading through the night. The pitch perfect dialogue made it easy to get to know the characters and as dark as Marie's choices sometimes are, her struggle and desire to be a good mother made me root for her all the way through. Other reviews call the book "gritty" and "raw" and "dangerous" and it is all those things, but it is also tender, and funny, and arresting--the rhythm of the prose is masterful even in the most painful scenes. A powerful, affecting, and authentic first novel, alive and glimmering on every page. A good bet for fans of Dorothy Allison's Bastard out of Carolina.

Too many bracelets By crafty First, let me say I purchased this book, and did not get a discount.This review is not based on the actual instructions, but on other factors.This should be called "Chain Mail Bracelet Elegance."Only 2 pendants?Should have had more pendants, earrings, and necklaces.Top heavy with bracelets.For basic information about chain mail, the author refers you, to her previous 2 books.This is not a book for beginners.Because of this, I seriously thought of giving it 3 stars;

If people follow you when you are out shopping wearing one of these stunning pieces, get used to it. Chain mail has that " special something", and every one of these projects is loaded with it!In the section titled: "The Elegance of Sparkle", the focus is on adding crystals, pearls, beads, rondelles, and stones to chain mail designs. There are sixteen projects to choose from. Bracelets, pendants, earrings and sets are represented. Each offering is smashing. If you are as blown away by the bracelet on the cover of this book as I was, find it in this section. It's the second project: the "Ladder in Mail Bracelet". As the author says, "Choose round crystals in any color you like for a bracelet full of color, texture and sparkle that is very comfortable to wear. It has it all!"Indeed it does! It emotes a sensual beauty. The balance between the rings and the accent crystals is perfect. Over and over in Chain Mail Elegance, this balance is evident. The author never sacrifices good taste for flash. Instead, you get magnificent designs fit for a queen, which can also be worn anywhere you like, for any occasion.Wait until you see the sophisticated "Cosmic Eye" bracelet and earrings. Once again crystal is a player in the design. This is a sleek and fascinating project which uses different sizes of silver jump rings and Swarovski Cosmic Rings. The instructions for this matched set provide you with a lovely bracelet and drop earrings with tons of punch. The flash here is more smoldering. It is terrifically chic and urban. The "Celtic Pendant", with its centerpiece bead of hematite, surrounded by sterling chain mail you weave into a flower shape, is also very pretty. It makes a great, faster-to-complete project, as the focus is on the centerpiece. There are instructions for the chain accompanying the pendant as well as some great tips from the author. Simple yet fascinating, and so pretty! The second part of the book, replete with fourteen projects, is titled "The Elegance of Color and Texture". As the author says when introducing this section, "Jump rings can come in many different shades. Yellow gold-filled rings, rose gold-filled rings, and niobium colored rings add interest...The silver, rose, and yellow rings can also be made from twisted wire, which gives the chain texture."What a treat the reader has in store, in this section! I love the attitude of these fantastic designs. The "Hugs & Kisses" Set is a great example of color and texture coming together to make a bracelet and earring set you would be proud show off as you lunched at the latest new restaurant in New York City. The silver jump rings in a smaller gauge, make up the "X" (kiss) pattern, while the larger gold twisted rings form the "O"s (the hugs). It's all attached together with plain golden rings and caught up with a divine modern silver clasp. With its matching earrings, it is jaw dropping and exquisite. An instant classic!I also loved the "Stretchable Nested Bracelet", which sports silver rings woven with rubber rings in a beautiful blue color. It has no clasp, as, when woven following the instructions, you end up with a fabulous and fine stretchy bangle anyone would adore. The blue and silver bring out the best in each other. This bracelet is not just novel, it is great! The "Double Vision" Bracelet is one more project with tons of appeal for any lover of chain mail. It expresses all that is special about chain mail, with simplicity and intricacy woven into every link. I love the plain silver and gold tones of this bracelet, although the author also suggests a cool sounding alternative: "exchange the yellow gold-filled rings for twisted rings that give texture, sparkle, and shine".If you have put down your pliers for a while, and not been making chain mail, this book is for you. If you have never tried chain mail, this book is for you. As previously mentioned, the author has two other, earlier works for beginning learners which will help with chain mail technique. However don't pass up this glorious design book. It is by far one of the prettiest chain mail jewelry books I have ever seen. It will bring every reason we love chain mail right to the fore. It reminds us that nothing replaces beautiful chain mail except more beautiful chain mail!Chain Mail Elegance, Jewelry Projects with Crystals, Pearls, and More by Sue Ripsch is simply smashing. It is solid in technique and delivers wonder and magic in its designs!

Before I xeroxed a copy of a copy of this 3 part series, I was fumbling miserably, but still determined to crack the nut that is pattern drafting for men's tailored garments. Of the 3 part series, this is essential. The other 2 volumes ramble on about how to set up your workroom, do your accounting, etc. Dull Reading. The Drafts are excellent. Easy to follow if you are familiar with drafting formulas for men's tailored garments. Most importantly, they work. They fit: the shoulder, neckline, armhole, balance, etc are all correct. In addition there is a section on fitting problems. Why they are happening and how to to solve them. This is the section which really opened a door for me. Too many books pass through fitting too quickly, without answering the issues that can bring one to tears. Now one can learn the reason for the excess fold of fabric at the back of the armscye is caused by taking in too much at the side seam. It is solved by taking more out at the center back, and on and on.I've been making men's tailored garments for 30 years, and cutting and fitting them for over 20. I consider this book essential to anyone interested in men's tailoring; modern or costume. I just purchased this book and set my beat up xerox aside.

The book tells how to measure an individual and draw full sized patterns to fit any particular individual. The patterns are traditional tailors patterns, very different from ladies dress making patterns. The patterns include a quarter inch seam. This is because the normal presser foot on a sewing machine that holds down the fabric is one half inch wide. The patterns will be drawn full size on brown wrapping paper and the paper pattern cut out. The tailor would trace the outline of the pattern with tailor's chalk on the upper layer of two layers of cloth. The two layers are for the right and left sides of the garment. The two layers of cloth will be cut outside the chalk line if more than a quarter inch seam allowance is wanted. A tailor tack presser foot will be put on the sewing machine and with a zigzag stitch and contrasting thread a seam of loose stitches will be sewn on top of the chalk line, thus marking the pattern on both layers of cloth. He would pull the two layers apart using a thread cutter to snip the threads. Then a normal presser foot will be put on the sewing machine to sew different pieces together. The pattern marking stitches would run along the edge of the normal presser foot and the seam would be a quarter inch from that. After the garment is sewn the marking stitches will be pulled out. The patterns include suits, coats, tuxedos, tail suits, riding pants, old fashioned golfing pants called plus fours. Some ladies patterns and childrens patterns are included. Volume 2 has a glossary of tailoring terms and more patterns. Volume 3 has "correct dress for the occasion", a fancy old fashioned coat worn only at royal affairs, and sewing instructions for a business suit. This is volume 1 of 3. The paperback is more durable than the hardback.

Sawyer This is a good, workable book of patterns from the early 20th century. I haven't tested them out, however they look to be very good. Perhaps the more valuable part of the book is the sections on how to adjust for a multitude of body shapes, and dealing with other fitting issues.

The Q&A section at the end is invaluable to all pet owners.Right after getting our dog, my wife took the two of us to puppy school. I had no idea how ignorant I was! I could have used his book back then! The section of big mistakes is also very much on target.Let’s face it, all puppies are cute. But, buying a pet because she’s cute is a big mistake. Oftentimes, parents cave and give into their children’s wishes to have a pet-without giving serious consideration to all the important criteria for safe pet selection prior to getting one. This book will help potential pet owners avoid those pitfalls.I do not agree that a gentle lead is negative reinforcement. A choke collar is.Spelling Errors:1.- “Before You Tale (TAKE) Your Dog Home”2.-“César Millán”Great book!
