I almost felt like I was walking in the woods with her. She shows how people living in a rural environment learn the plants in their local surroundings and take care of them, because they return to them year after year to harvest them for their needs. She is earnest in wanting to share with people her knowledge, much learned firsthand, about the many uses of native plants. She gives examples of uses of each of the selected 10 plants, and explains in detail how to prepare them in teas, decoctions, tinctures and poultices. Lots of pictures help with identification. This is a great book for beginning herb users. I would have liked even more plant recipes/formulas, but this has plenty to practice and learn.

It was easy to read, easy to understand and the basic principles of Madison's #DIY on drying and preserving plants for different uses will help me with so many other things I have in my garden. I will be planting some of the ones she talks about next summer. This is definitely worth getting - it is a keeper for any garden library.

If you plant and use these as described they will serve you for many years.If a time comes when food, medicines and other things become unavailable you will be prepared. At the last minute the plants might not be possible to get and then they have to have time to grow. No need to be afraid of disaster if you plan ahead, enjoying every day by using these plants for now and the future. Beautiful Photos.
