PDF Ebook Tao of Trailing: A Guide To Finding Contour In The Chaos Of Scent Dogs, by Jeff Schettler
The Tao of Trailing is not simply an advanced training manual on working a trailing/tracking dog but more importantly it is Jeff's philosophical approach to working with dogs in general. K9 work is more than a matter of learning rules or theory. One cannot master K9 deployment by a training program alone. Like martial arts, working a dog takes a certain style or panache; an individual component unique not only to the handler but the dog alike and in partnership. The relationship between a handler and his or her K9 is formed with blood, sweat, tears, and a lot of time. And of course, Jeff will impart to the reader his love and passion: The Hunt!

If you have any desire at all to learn the right way to trail a human being using dogs, this is the book for you.

McFadden Excellent book on the finer elements of training and deploying a trailing dog. Readers new to the field would benefit from starting with Schettler's previous book, K9 Trailing: The Straightest Path, and then immediately reading this book for the finer points. But this isn't just a book for trailing handlers. Any handler working a dog in detection or scent work will benefit from the discussion of training methods, reward systems, tiered training, and much more. Good work, Jeff!

A masterpiece By GeorgeD "The Tao of Trailing," the 4th book by Jeff Schettler of Georgia K9 LLC, surpasses his other works and is sort of an advanced continuation of his excellent work "K9 Trailing: the Straightest Path." It is hands down the BEST book I have ever read about the art of man hunting and tracking/trailing in the real world. Schettler's obvious passion and focus on tracking/trailing and what really works when trying to track down fugitives who are actively trying to evade you comes through on every single page. I honestly don't think there was a single page where I wasn't struck by at least some point Schettler was making about how dogs learn, how to properly build and harness a dog's natural tracking drive, the many ways we consciously or subconsciously can guide our dogs in training (and how that creates a handler dependent dog), the importance of patience, the fallacy of us thinking we know where scent lies on a track etc. etc. I literally had mixed emotions reading this terrific book: elation at the wisdom contained therein and how my eyes were being opened page by page even as I cringed as I thought back to some of the errors we all have made in training our k9 partners. My one complaint is that Schettler couldn't have written this book years ago! Buy it. It is well worth the investment.George Demos, Massachusetts State Police K-9 unit
