Within the genre of commercial animal photography, Walter Chandoha is a master. His photographs of cats in particular have appeared in the pages of National Geographic and Life magazine, and have been absorbed into the public subconscious via countless posters, pet-food packaging, T-shirts and other uses. The Internet is awash with cat pictures, but Chandoha's cat pictures might be seen as the forefather of them all.Chandoha's images are striking not only for their singular charm, but also for having established a vocabulary of the animal studio portrait with a signature look--clean, brightly colored backdrops and high-key "glamour" backlighting of the subjects. The Cat Photographer is a fun book, but it also offers insight into the unique career of a successful commercial photographer who carved out his own niche. Here, Chandoha is interviewed by David La Spina, who has been working with Chandoha and his family to bring his archive to public attention, and Brittany Hudak. The interview includes photography tips and diagrams of Chandoha's studio setup, and an account of how the photographer came to make a living with animal photography.Walter Chandoha (born 1920) has worked as a freelance photographer for more than four decades, landing more than 300 magazine covers and thousands of advertising campaigns. He began photographing cats shortly after the end of World War II. "Although I did not realize it at the time," recalls Chandoha about his early cat photographs, "we were building a stock picture file that is still yielding today, some 50 years later."

I enjoyed the text in the back of the book; after leafing through the dozens of photos I was able to get a better appreciation of the compositions and a nice bit of the artist's history. The colors in the book are spectacular as are the cover and overall look! Mr. Chandoha has created a fabulous genre whereby one can sit down with a cup of tea and enjoy the entire work and gain some encouragement for the working world. I remember seeing his work in the World Book Encyclopedia in the late 1960s, which is not mentioned in the book. Congratulations to the artist!

Kenyon I read an interview with the author and somehow got the impression that the book was not only a picture book, but an extended interview in which the author talks about cat photography. I must have dreamed that, because there is almost no text in this book - it's pictures only. Lovely, splendid cat pictures, with an end page explaining who the author was. A bit disappointed.

By Cat and Cozy Mystery Book Lover I have always loved Walter Chandoha's cat and kitten photographs and have collected severalof his books over the years by coming across them at used book stores. It just makes me feelrelaxed to sit back in a comfy chair and look at all his wonderfully cute kitty photos. I love thevintage "1960-1970" type style of all of his photographs. I was so excited to come acrossthis new book at my local bookstore, I bought it on the spot, paying full price when I could havewaited and gotten it cheaper here on Amazon. But, I just couldn't wait and wasn't disappointed. There are so many sweet cute cats and kittens (all in color) in the pages of this book.
