In a barbaric future, enough hope remains for some to sacrifice everything: the gripping story of a father's struggle to save his son from a corrupt society in a pitiless, bleak, futuristic America. Mired in a corrupt, dangerous city that is on the verge of collapse, a father and son flee to a rural village, hoping to find refuge from their violent lives. What they find is not the haunted hippie environs of local legend, but a gritty farm community that thrives despite the threat of criminal invasions and the ominous presence of a nearby nuclear reactor. A bioengineer, Lucas lends his expertise to the efforts of sustainability, while his son-a rising young photojournalist-falls in love with one of the sons of a folksy family whose charm lies in its ability to keep the community together, through music and love-until disaster shakes their fragile world.

Review "A sort of Brave New World for modern times, updated with Jackson's expansive, unique vision of a world bordering on collapse, but not yet devoid of hope. The unique imagery and characters summoned in Haw is equal parts moving, funny, irreverent, timely, and verging on sheer brilliance. I relished every moment of it." - Mitch Cullin, author (A Slight Trick of the Mind, Tideland)"Deliciously dark and compelling insights interspersed with moments of enlightenment and hope are the driving force of a novel that focuses on the course of survival and what is lost in that process. Very highly recommended: a powerful read that's hard to put down!" - D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review"Sean Jackson has written a strong and all-too-believable novel about the world we are busy making. I stand eager to read whatever comes next from Sean Jackson." - NC Poet Al Maginnes, in Niche Literary Magazine"It's that sliver of hope and the author's vivid characterizations that give Haw its spark. Readers might be reminded of the plight of the Joads in The Grapes of Wrath. Haw is futuristic science fiction, but it's also a good example of literary fiction that effectively portrays man's inhumanity to man without sacrificing the salvation of hope." - Sue Ellis, Prick of the Spindle

In their city, death is common, but when it comes to their doorstep they decide it is time to leave. While searching for a place to live, they meet a rural family. Orel quickly becomes interested in one of the family’s sons, and their love begins to grow. Little do they know that disaster is upon them. Will they make it out in time or die like many others?Opinion:When I began reading this book, I was immediately pulled into Lucas’s world. Though very gory, the author described the state of the world in this book perfectly. The descriptions he used were enough to give me an idea of what it would be like to live in a devastated world, yet they weren't so long that they bored me.The characters weren’t your average heroes; they were damaged people living in an imperfect world. Though damaged, they were likable and relatable. The author set up the characters and kept me on the edge of my seat through the use of dual points of view.I was a bit confused about what the author called "citoyens." A bit more elaboration on who they were may have made it less confusing for me.All in all, this book is a swift read for those who like dark, apocalyptic worlds.

The story is not only interesting, it is emotionally powerful and moving. The characters are incredible and show what it truly means to be brave in the face of fear; to truly love someone unconditionally, and that even when it does not seem like it there is always hope. This was such a great read, I actually read it twice. Sean Jackson's writing is hauntingly beautiful and there were quite a few chapters where I found myself moved to tears by his eloquent prose. Haw is a book worth reading and is destined to be a classic because of how inspirational the story and characters are.

Haw walks that fine line between a bleak dystopian book and one with a message of hope, that drives you to think about your world and what small things in your own life you can do to prevent the kind of ecological disaster that has set the stage for the events of Haw. Sean Jackson is a gifted new voice.
