A layered thriller based in historical fact By Jim Napier, mystery & crime fiction reviewer When seventeen-year-old American schoolgirl Kristen Carson is given the opportunity to study in Florence for a year, it seems too good to be true--and it is. Just as her parents arrive for a visit, she suddenly disappears. Her influential father pulls out all the stops in an effort to find her, but there isn't a lot to go on. Gradually, however, a picture emerges, and it's not pretty: just before vanishing she left a note for her flatmate, saying she'd be away for a few days; then she spent a wad of money on new clothing. Not a kidnapping, then.It falls on detective Enzo Saenz and his partner to track her down. Their only clue is a cellphone photo of her getting into a car with a man, not identifiable but clearly older than Kristen. The father doesn't recognize him, but Saenz believes the girl's stepmother Anna, does. When he confronts her privately, though, she denies it. Before long Anna too has disappeared, and in an ominously similar way, drawing out a large sum of money and leaving all her personal identification behind. Another superb novel from Lucretia Grindle By Welsh Corgi fan Like Villa Triste, which I also loved, The Lost Daughter contains two layers of one story. There is a mystery of today, and there is also a plot from 1978, when Aldo Moro was kidnapped and murdered. Of course, as we all know will happen, the two plots eventually come together into one.Also like Villa Triste, The Lost Daughter is superb. The characters come to life, the locations vibrate with reality, and the denouement is throat-catching. It is almost too vivid and real, if that is possible.I have recommended Villa Triste to many people, all of whom have loved it. I plan to do the same with The Lost Daughter, and I expect the same reaction.The two books are, quite simply, astoundingly good. Read them.
