Review "A well-written, grim portrayal of Edelman’s struggle to survive."—Publishers Weekly"Sharon Peters masterfully shares the journey of Calvin, Boychick, and Tobi, the guide dogs who penetrated a Holocaust survivor’s pain, distrust, and blindness. Max Edelman’s life-affirming and exquisitely written story raises love for dogs to a whole new level of respect and gratitude. This book’s messages of hope and healing are impossible to forget and essential to remember."—Allen and Linda Anderson, cofounders of Angel Animals Network and authors of A Dog Named Leaf: The Hero from Heaven Who Saved My Life

From the Back Cover IN MEMORIAMLyons Press notes with sorrow the death of Max Edelman, a Holocaust survivor and the subject of Trusting Calvin, on November 5, 2013. He was 91 years old. Days before he died, he spoke with a school teacher about the Holocaust. He wanted not only to commemorate the lives lost but to point out how today's rigid thinking, unwillingness to hear contrary view points, and contempt for anyone different reminded him of those darker days. He told his story one last time because, if it helped just one person become kinder, less judgmental, more open to seeing our human similarities rather than differences, it might serve as the tiny stone that could create important ripples into the future. Edelman was beaten blind in a Nazi labor camp more than 70 years ago, but he saw better than most. He will be missed.

This book is both an amazing story of the human spirit and a touching story of how a guide dog (Calvin) gave new life to a survivor (Max) who was blinded by Nazi guards in a concentration camp. I couldn't put this book down once I started it. Imagine being terrified of dogs because of witnessing one kill a fellow prisoner on command. Imagine how hard it would be to trust a dog again. Then imagine you are terrified of dogs AND blind. The bond formed between Max and Calvin, and the new world opened up to Max, will make you both smile and weep. Trusting Calvin is a beautifully told account and I highly recommend it.

Sanger I admit I love books about animals and the special connections they can have with their humans, but this book is so much more than that. It's a story of a man who by rights shouldn't have survived his youth, much less stride into his nineties. It's a story of life-long learning ... and repressing. And ultimately it's the story of love, devotion and trust and how those things can change a life forever. Trusting Calvin is a gem of a book by an author who knows better than most how to tell a story. It's a beautiful story beautifully written. I found it hard to put down!

When he told me about this book over Thanksgiving, I immediately ordered it from amazon. Though I had a general idea of what he had been through in his past, this book brought it to life in much more detail than I'd ever known about. My respect for him grew even more every page I turned. Through the help of Calvin, Boychick and Tobi, it is truly inspiring to read about how Max became a leader on the forefront of helping other blind people make the most of their lives through his volunteer work, as well as finally being able to open up about the past, and share his story with the world through speaking engagements and published works he has written. I highly recommend this book to everyone. It will both bring tears to your eyes and put a smile on your face as you are taken through the journey of Max's life, and how getting over his fear of dogs has helped him make the most of it.
