By endlesswonderofreading Note to self: Stop reading books that compare themselves to either Gone Girl or Gillian Flynn because A.) Gone Girl wasn't that great to begin with and B.) it seems like everyone is trying to write the next "Gillian Flynn" style hit and so all we have are numerous substandard mystery books with twists you can see coming from a mile away. The Bones of You falls under this big umbrella of meh-ness.My main issue with The Bones of You is that I have no idea how Kate fit into this whole book and that's a problem when you consider that she is the main character. I just couldn't see why, though. She barely knew Rosie (the deceased teenager), her daughter wasn't friends with Rosie, while Kate was familiar with Rosie's mother, they weren't friends. So why am I being subjected to Kate's thoughts and feelings on Rosie's death when she had barely anything to do with Rosie? Due to this, I found Kate's chapters to be either a bore or completely annoying. All I kept thinking while reading her narrated chapters was "How are you important? What do you have to do with anything?" And at the end of the book, I still didn't have an answer to these questions. I would have preferred that the second narrator be someone who was familiar with Rosie instead of someone who was just in the background.Another thing about Kate: when was a gullible idiot. There's just no nice way to say that. She's one of those people that just runs around with her theories to anyone and everyone who would listen. On top of that, she's just incredibly inconsistent. She puts these clues together that seem very far-fetched, but when she's given mountains of evidence that someone is lying to her, she still believes everything that is coming out of this person's mouth...because she was an idiot...one who didn't know Rosie, but yet, somehow was deemed important enough to narrate half the book! (I know I'm harping on this, but it's annoying and I can't get over it).Rosie's chapters were more interesting to me. While they were slightly disjointed, The Bones of You was never more of a page-turner then when I was reading about Rosie's childhood, her emotions, and those moments leading up to her death. That's the only reason this book is getting two stars instead of one. This book would have been so much better if we had just taken Kate completely out of the picture (seeing as how she contributed nothing to anything) and just focused on Rosie.Overall, I found The Bones of You to be a bit of a mess. A big chunk of this book was a slog to get through, Kate was pointless, a lot of the characters (ahem, Laura, Angus, Grace) were equally useless, and the twist was highly predictable and the farthest thing from a surprise. I say spend your time reading another mystery.

By Fairbanks Reader This book starts out with a bang and it gripped me from page one. It is a page-turner of the first order. However, it started to disappoint me during the second half when the author repeated herself and the story got too predictable.If you've read Alice Sebold's, 'The Lovely Bones', you will recognize the theme of this book. Rosie, an 18 year-old, is murdered and from her perspective and those left to live their lives on earth, we slowly learn what happened to her. We are privy to her 'perfect' family which is not so perfect once the layers are peeled back and examined more closely. There is Rosie's mother Jo, an alcoholic and a woman who lives solely to please her cruel and philandering husband. There is Delphine, Rosie's younger sister who is unloved and almost invisible.Kate is Jo's neighbor who tries to befriend Jo after the horrific loss of her child. Jo, however, is mercurial and difficult for Kate to read. Kate is the salt of the earth - messy, wears her heart on her sleeve, loves horses, and misses her daughter Grace who has gone off to university. Kate gets involved in solving the murder especially because someone is leaving puzzling notes in her box. She explores all possibilities including Rosie's boyfriends, her father Neal, and wonders who could have been writing and leaving these notes with hints about the murder on her doorstep.Laura, Kate's old childhood friend, is a reporter, and is dropped into the plot like a deus ex machina. There is no characterization to give her a persona of her own but she is the 'spokesperson' about what is happening in the case as it unfolds.While this book hooked me and I couldn't wait to finish it, I slowly became disappointed with its unfolding. I was able to guess the ending about 2/3 through and the book lagged for me after that. The writer has a great way with words and the characterizations of Neal, Kate, Delphine, Rosie and Jo are very good. It would have been better to have left the secondary characters out as they only serve a purpose rather than being real characters in themselves.I enjoyed this book and the beginning of it is definitely a '5'. However, it earned only a 3.75 by the end.

A forceful and intense story that totally engaged my emotions By I Do The Speed Limit I thoroughly enjoyed the way in which this psychological mystery (I call this a "who-dun-it") was written. Two voices tell the story: That of Rosie, the 18-year old murder victim and Kate, the caring mother of one of her schoolmates. The two totally different points of view really worked together to get the story told. With well-chosen words, a smooth writing style, logical scenes and several interesting characters and offshoots, this story developed an intensity as it progressed. It was hard for me to put it down. I would not call it a "thriller", as the murder opens the story, and there is no race to find the murderer--just a forceful, steady unfolding of facts.My heart did not race and I was not sitting on the edge of my seat. But, my emotions were totally engaged in all of the scenes. Just the kind of book I love to settle in with on a rainy afternoon. It was a quick read: I wish it had lasted longer, but in actuality, it was a perfect length.What I found so very interesting about the two voices, the two points of view: The murder victim is totally surprised by the identity of her murderer. Her life flashes before her as she passes away. In death, she has a detached point of view that allows her to see what she was blind to in life. Kind of like "I should have seen this coming," or "wow, was I blind", "I should have known." Her new-found knowledge--in death--makes her realize that her life's work is not done. So, there is a little bit of unworldliness in this book, as the girl's spirit remains in the small town and countryside until the murderer is exposed and the real story told.The other point of view comes from a middle-aged mother, wife, gardener and landscape artist, and "horse whisperer". In life, the murdered girl was drawn to this woman and took comfort and refuge in being close to the woman, her horses and her home. The woman is the perfect character to show concern and empathy, and it is those traits that compel her to persevere in uncovering the truth.Enough said, as I don't want to ruin the story for you. I'm sure there will be some readers who say that the reactions of certain characters in this book are unbelievable and far-fetched. And they will make a good argument. I often dislike books because I think an author has manipulated a story line beyond the point of believability. I've given thought to that, regarding this book, and I've come to the conclusion that the events told here are believable: As unbelievable as it may seem, these things can and do happen. Shocking, horrendous, sickening, but doable.This story takes place in England. I would not call it a "cozy" though. I also would not term it "dark". Yes, many aspects, facets, of the story are very, very dark. But there is enough good, happy, pleasant instances to balance things out nicely.I will definitely be on the look-out for another novel by this author Debbie Howells.
