By D B Carlyle I'm sure I've read other books on puppy care but I found this to have lots of ideas and information I'd not read before. While some of it is rather obvious, it's the type of things you just don't think of until someone points them out. I especially liked the advice on how to determine how well taken care of and adjusted a pup is by watching it interact with other pups and the people who raised it. This is a short read, probably under and hour so it's a good introduction to the basic information you'd need to start your search for a great pet.

Incredibly informative with a great layout and lovely glossy photos!!! Everything from choosing the right breeder to problem solving! I'm sure I'll be dipping in and out of this book as I go through the challenges of a brand new puppy!

You can't go wrong in using it to get the basics. But when you finally choose your puppy, if you haven't already, you might want to buy a book on your particular breed.Where should you buy your puppy, anywhere or from a reputable breeder? How do you puppy-proof your home? I've had quite a few puppies and can tell you that you shouldn't get too disappointed when you discover you CAN'T absolutely puppy-proof anything, but you can take some measures that will help.I found helpful the chapters on feeding a puppy with a healthy diet, dealing with picky eaters (there are such among dogs?), and basic care. It's important to follow good dental care, traveling safely, bathing, nail care, and regular vet visits.How to notice signs of illness and what to do. Vaccinations. Fleas. Worming. Neutering or spaying. Exercising and playing. Sounds like a lot of bother. But if you follow the author's advice on how to choose the right dog for you, and if you love that pup (as you should) it's not work--it's love. This book is about sharing love between you and your pup. Enjoy it.
