Just by arranging them indifferent ways you can create a unique pattern. This book goes one step more by showing how you can use these amazingly simple squares to create a true work of art and have fun doing it.

Just Plenty of Inspiration and Fun With This Newfangled HST By SLS Peggy Holt reveals what's up her sleeve in The Magic of Half Square Triangles: the addition of a simple border to a simple HST creates countless complex designs. As with many books from AQS Publishing, there are no projects with step-by-step instructions here. What you get is the basic unit, the general approach, and a large gallery of possibilities. The value here is two-fold. First, you get to eavesdrop on an artist's creative thought process. Second, it is up to YOU to take it further in an active fashion instead of passively replicating someone else's end product.Ms. Holt's invention, the HST with 2 borders, gets joined with another HST to make a square unit called a "tile". (Incidentally, this resulting unit is reminiscent of a basket block seen in some Thimbleberries publications, where the border is the basket's handle. But the size and proportions are very different.) So simple, yet it can yield complex designs that can appear woven or trellised. Play around with that unbordered HST by making it a pieced unit and you get a whole new bag of tricks. There is a lot of text here that requires careful reading. It's rather daunting, but logical and thorough. I found that by studying some of my favorite gallery quilts - Ms. Holt calls these gallery sections "quilt shows" - and parsing out the tiles, I could better digest the "how to" aspects of the book. What you end up with are quilts you've never seen before. As for skill level, the basic tile unit is quite simple. Where additional skill is required is in joining all the scads of tiles together. As you can see from the quilt on the cover, there are so many pointy bits that need to align with each other. Ms. Holt provides several indispensable tips, but much practice - and patience - is needed to produce a quilt like that one. Fortunately there is a wide range of pattern possibilities and tile counts.

Cozby Peggy is a friend of mine and a great inspiration. My skills are not great at precise piecing but I find this book amazing and inspiring. It makes me want to do a better job at the piecing I do. Peggy's mind is amazing as she goes through the design process. I have read the book cover to cover and continue to go back to just admire the pictures. The fabric choices are so good it just makes you want to make something bright and cheerful.
