4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. history of dogs By Mei This book is available for free on te web. At the moment I write this Amazon does not offer this book in Europe, but via the web this book can be downloaded from anywhere. The printed editions have pictures, but the eBook versions don't.This book written by Robert Leighton (1859-1934) was first published in 1910. The printed version has 364 pages (wordcount: 123,770). The book contains a general history of dogs and practical information on breeding, management, some common ailments of the dogs and their treatment. The emphasis of the book however is on breeds of dogs and their history. Over 50 different breeds are discribed in this book. The information given is at some points dated. For example: the colours considered to be correct for poodles are given in this book as: black, white, brown and blue. The colours that are considered correct today are: black, white , brown, grey, and apricot. This 'Dogs and All about Them' is a nice and very readable book that gives interesting information on the history of dogbreeds, but the information it gives is dated. This book is more of a history book than a practical guide on dogs today. I do recommend this book to doglovers!

This book was written back in the day when regular people could own a dog just for fun, but dogs were still bred for a purpose and great care was taken to produce truly remarkable dogs! This is a very dry and sometimes laborious book to work through (like the physical attributes of a breed that more or less no longer exists and isn't a particular favourite) but it is an invaluable resource for understanding how dog breeds came to be how we know them today! It is both shocking and endearing at times to read and discover the unabashed recollection of the true role of dogs in the 18 to 1900's.My advice: if you have the endurance and stubborn interest, you will be a wealth of knowledge! If you find yourself lacking in adequate stamina, skip to your favourite breeds and be content to be expert of few. Please note, this book is NOT boring, it is just very informative with no photos ( at least in the free one!)

If you're a dog lover who just wants to know about dogs without having to read through long explanations of concepts, this is not the book for you. I'm a behaviorist. It was great for me. I let my son take a crack at it. He loves dogs. He handed it back in two days. There was no warmth in the book. It's just cold facts.
