I have purchased hundreds of needlework books from Amazon and used book stores and really enjoy the old time authors: they're so expert that they assume you're about 4 steps ahead of where you are. But then, a century ago, women's lives were much different than they are now...there was more time to embroider and more need to. I find it so interesting that Flora Klickmann chose the word "Cult" for the title as that's what it feels like to me a lot!!I googled her and found that author Emily Flora Klickmann was born in 1867 but lived till the year I was born! She was English and this book was about her her 18th book after writing several series of books for girls on flowers and deportment and such. She also wrote a couple books on crochet and I own these:Victorian Fancy Stitchery: Techniques and Designs (Dover Embroidery, Needlepoint)Victorian Needlework: Techniques and Designs (Dover Embroidery, Needlepoint)both of which have been reprinted by Dover books.I gave this book 4 stars as a compromise: I know the quality of the original would be worth 5 stars regarding excellent content and b&w photos which were pretty good for the publication date of 1914. But I would give the quality of this reprint only 2 stars. People! If you're going to copy an old book, set your printer to dark!! For the words here are quite faint. Almost every page with some variation could have been much more legible if only someone were paying attention. The pictures are generally better than the text but even they could have used some touching up.On kindle...well...this is sort of a mess. If you click on Look inside, or even scroll to the top of this page, you see lots of gobbledygook as text did not translate well some of the time. So even if the words are faint in this paperback reprint, at least they make sense.Hungarian embroidery, Berlin wool-work, filet lace, "simple" (tee hee) insertions (in netting), hardanger and many other techniques are covered fairly well. But...er...what the heck is Amager embroidery? Well, that's an island just outside the city of Copenhagen and the work contains colorful flowers but I can't make out the stitches at all. Miss Klickmann talks about making a "d'oily" and I can find not one other such spelling of "doily." Maybe it's an English thing.Anyway, if paging through a poor copy of a 100-year-old book makes me want to get the original publication, it must be a worthwhile book. However difficult and inaccessible the diagrams and text are, the pictures and the conversational tone are quite lovely.
