About the Author Linda Chamberlain is a journalist and author of the historical novel, The First Vet. She has run a natural horse livery yard and is on the admin team of the Barefoot Horse Owners Group on Facebook. She owns three barefoot horses who feature in her popular 'naked horse' blog.

Truly, though, I didn’t understand the magnitude of the damage shoes can do. I wanted them barefoot for the trail riding we were doing – we didn’t have bits in their mouths either, the journey was all about freedom. But it’s logical when you think about it. That’s why her friend at the hospital in the story got it. He didn’t know anything about horses, but the barefoot care made perfect sense to him.As well as passionate about horses, I am passionate about sailing. For many years I was barefoot on a boat, for weeks at sea. My feet actually got bigger, they spread, they became tougher – horses' feet are the same – they're flexible, not a lump of nothing at the end of their leg.But my knowledge extend to the depths of Linda’s I am embarrassed to say. I, too, had horses shod when I was younger. Linda’s story is clever in that you learn along with her. She states the believers and the non-believers case. She doesn’t hold back when she encounters problems in her quest to have all her horses barefoot.Told with searing honesty, some humour (I giggled at Linda’s antics falling off), and technical explanations -simply written, so they don't put your head in a spin – this is a must read for anyone with horses or thinking about getting one. In fact, it’s so good I think every hoof trimmer should hand this book out to clients who are going barefoot for the first time. It covers many of the frequently asked questions with empathy for the process but without glossing over the difficulties. I have taken three horses through the shod to barefoot transition now, and they were all different, but during the most difficult one, Linda’s funny but thoughtful writing would have provided me with inspiration to continue on the barefoot path. Transitioning to barefoot can feel like an uphill battle some days, especially if you are trying to continue riding with shod friends or to graze where all the other horses are shod. It can be a lonely endeavour where self doubt gets fed by ‘friends’ and your resolve can weaken as you become more and more aware of people criticising your choice. This book is a friendly and encouraging voice to counter the general negativity in the mainstream horse world. I was sad to reach the end of this book and hope she writes a sequel one day.

I found it helpful when I decided to try barefoot with my horse. She is brave for sharing her story and for going with her gut and going against the majority. People tend to get very defensive when their ways are criticized-even if those ways aren't based on current evidence. She brings up issues that explain why someone would be hesitant to try barefoot with their horses.
