This provocative exposé puts our most revered interactions with animals under the microscope. Meticulously documented, it raises poignant questions about the nature of our relationships with animals, and reveals little-known aspects of the industry behind it all. Pet food manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, veterinarians, shelters, humane societies, animal activists, factory farms, and many more are at the core of a subtle exploitation that operates under the guise of love and compassion.

Charles Danten makes compelling, astute arguments regarding the underlying psychology of animal ownership in the modern era. ‘Slaves of our Affection’ has the uncanny ability of forcing the reader to reflect on their own motives, and rationales for endorsing animal companionship.Danten’s withdrawal from the veterinary profession (and his persistent criticisms of the companion animal industry) demonstrates the perpetual balance, or imbalance, between compassion, medicine and business.‘Slaves of our Affection’ is a unique, engaging, thought-provoking commentary that provides the reader with a post-consumer perspective on animal companion welfare; almost a rebuttal to the advertisements, indoctrination and dogma that illustrates that the North American household requires a dog to be ‘whole’.There is an unsettling challenge for the reader once finishing the book, which Danten does briefly address; being ‘what now’? One has to first contemplate where these arguments fit into their values, morals, lifestyle and career, if at all. And ask themselves, what now?Should we feel contempt for our “well-intentioned” exploitation of animal companions? Should our perspectives of animal ownership change? Or should we simply live contently via the adage “ignorance is bliss”?

Makes you think about all you believed By Cocoa Lover I have become saddened more about how animals are treated and wanted to understand a former vet's point of view. I think it's double standards with us enlightened species and other animals. Pet ownership is based on our wants and control. It's the luck of the draw what species you are born into - as we love 'pets' but don't tolerate some other mammals/insects if they are considered pests. Good book to make you think whether we really are helping animals. This book is as much about our 'gentle' abuse as about human psychology I think.
