About the Author Karin Van Voorhees has been making things all her life, but jewelry design became her passion seven years ago when she was Associate Editor during the inaugural year of "Bead Style" magazine. Many, many necklaces, bracelets, and earrings later, Karin still remembers the challenges of being new to a hobby, and brings the beginner's perspective to any class she teaches. She currently works for the Kalmbach Publishing Company as a senior editor in the books division, and has authored several books including "The Absolute Beginners Guide Stringing Beaded Jewelry." Karin lives in Oconomowoc, Wis.

And then you find out how complex and painstaking it really is! What this book does is truly simplify the how-to's so ANYONE can be successful at making jewelry. Clear instructions, beautiful pictures - and the projects look like what you'd see in a high end boutique! With a few simple tools, some pretty beads and wire, and a free afternoon you'll be well on your way to a fun and rewarding new hobby. This would make a great gift for yourself or for any crafter in your life!

I feel the right book can make all the difference when relying on it as if it were a tutorial. And let me just say upfront:I have no stake in this book, by the way. I'm not a paid reviewer or someone who gets free products for reviewing them (although if anyone were to offer me those options, I'd love it!) I just want people to know that this book is a great choice and there are many other books around, but I can say from experience that this book is reliable, has great original ideas, and specifically is geared towards making professional-looking jewelry over cheap or "crafty" art projects.I trust this book now that I've used it and seen the outcome (I'll try to post a picture of my necklace later).My sister got this book because we wanted to get the whole family together (ladies for this jewelry-making, the men came along to provide us with entertainment) to make a piece of jewelry together. She chose the key necklace, pictured towards the very end of the book and we all agreed that looked easy enough, and we all liked the finished necklaces pictured in the book.We had never done anything like this before - one of my aunts has done a little amateur beading and jewelry-making herself, but not a ton.My sister and I went to the craft store and brought this book along with us. The book very clearly showed us a list of exactly what to buy from the craft store, and it was super easy to match our purchase with the "ingredient list" from this book!As newbies, we were worried we'd mess it up or not know what something was - that was the farthest thing fro what happened.We felt like Bosses when we got through the checkout - and got all the materials needed to make 6 different necklaces for under $35, so the book takes material costs into account very nicely.When we all got together to make our necklaces, we had a wonderful afternoon!It was a huge relief to find that the book gave very easy-to-understand instructions, yet wasn't super wordy; there were just short, simple sentences for each step, and pictures with steps shown, and even alternative options for us to make our own personal unique twist.We laughed, helped each other, shared beads, and came away from the table beaming with pride over the necklaces we each had just made - which seriously look store-bought! Then we all (men too!) went down the street for dinner, and it was a memorable and fun experience that I will remember whenever I put on my necklace! Making the memory was just as fulfilling as making my jewelry and this book in particular helped make that a great time!I had worried that I'd get the wrong materials, or that we'd find something else we needed that wasn't listed, or that we'd end up with necklaces that looked obviously home-made and crafty - none of us wanted to make friendship bracelets or anything else that would be embarrassing to wear.NONE of those fears came true, and they very well could have if we'd gotten a different, less informative or overly-complicated book! This ended up being fun and relaxed, when it could have been frustrating or disastrous with different instructions or less how-to images.My sister getting this exact book was the best move, and I feel that her picking the right book made our day a success!All the instructions are clear, pictures are helpful, and nothing is overly complicated, OR dumbed-down!It's a great mix of professionalism and know-how that resulted in EXACTLY what was promised: truly professional-looking jewelry and a memorable and fun experience.We are already looking forward to next time!I cannot recommend this book highly enough, and am so happy that we picked this book over any others we could have chosen!

You are definitely gonna want this book, or you're gonna want to get it for someone you love who is a beginner. I am so so thankful that there is a designer who specializes in beautiful and interesting projects that will allow beginners to practice the basics.In part one, Karin teaches six basic skills, each followed by projects that will help you practice the skills in a FUN and beautiful way. She covers jump rings, plain loops, wrapped loops, top-drilled loops, crimps, and knots. There are no sources given for the materials used, but all items are commonly available through online jewelry making catalogs and at stores such as Michaels.In parts two and three, Karin covers more design-oriented skills, such as using spacers and beadcaps, creating multistrand pieces, choosing between symmetry and asymmetry, designing with brights and neutrals, and swapping out different findings (like clasps) for different design looks.Each of the basic and design skills is covered with a brief but clear series of photos and instructions, and is then followed by three or more beautiful projects. I just can't think of any better way to introduce these skills than to end up with pretty pieces to wear when you're done. Great job, Karin!
