Jeni Baker is a fabric designer for Art Gallery fabrics as well as a well-know pattern designer. She lectures nationally on the art of quilt making with a focus on exploring effective color choices, one of the most challenging areas for quilters. By Amazon Customer I've been a fan of Jeni's work for years, reading up on her blog and in magazine articles, collecting her fabrics etc. and think she is a super awesome person. When you read this book you feel as if she is right there with you talking you through each method she shares with warmth and charm. And she is also a very "understanding" and non-judgmental person who gets that mistakes happen and not to worry, with practice we can always improve and I just love that attitude that she shares in the book and you definitely get the impression that she is one fantastic teacher if you ever get to take a class with her. I only bought this book because I was seriously stumped on some HST's I needed to make to finish one simple project and even though some of the information I needed was available online, this book is like the definitive authoritative source for everything you ever needed to know or didn't know you needed to know about how to make HST's, PLUS its pretty exciting once you realize the huge number of block designs you can make from just HST's based on the very awesome gallery and design pages in the book. There was only one area in the book that I thought could have used a few more pages to expand on and that was related to the tutorial on how to trim the HST's. There are step by step photos, and step by step instructions, but after reading through it I was left feeling a little confused but perhaps if I actually gave it a go it would just come right to me and I'll have an "ahah" moment! But the author did say the secret to success was in the trimming and all her measurements for making HST's (excellent tables for a huge number of them based on 3 different methods) assume that you will trim them down to the final finished size. Perhaps the author had wanted to include more information and this was a publisher call that deleted more complete details that might have been originally submitted in the author's manuscript? Either way, I'm sure if I needed clarification Jeni seems like the kind of person that would be more than happy to email back a reply. There is also a recommended ruler in her favorite supply section in the back of the book for trimming the blocks which I do have so will definitely give it a whirl with that and I'm sure all will go well. So very appreciative of the enormous amount of work and effort that went into the making of this book. I seriously think it will be a "classic" for any quilter's library and I'm sure we will be seeing lots of quilts with HST's in the blogosphere inspired by this book!

I love Half-square triangles and have always been fascinated with the design options. This book has clear directions, easy math if you want to figure out your own sizes or patterns and lots of great tips! I want to make 4 projects at least! Highly recommend!

True, a lot of the basics that are covered are available online, but this is a good reference, has lovely pictures and projects, and is worth it to the quilter who likes to do her own thing (but with some structure).
