Three years ago, Elaine Acker interviewed Dr. Deb Tolman for a article on keyhole gardening. That article became her most popular article ever. A keyhole garden is the ultimate raised-bed planter. It’s six feet in diameter with a composting basket in the center that adds moisture and nutrients to the soil. Author Dr. Deb Tolman eats from her keyhole gardens all year around and reminds readers that it's not necessary to spend hundreds of dollars a month on groceries when it's possible to grow healthy produce at home. Deb's harvest includes carrots, chard, kale, tomatoes, berries and more, rivaling the best farmers markets around. In this book, you’ll learn how to build a keyhole garden and how to fill it with rich layers of compost to grow delicious, nutritious fruits and vegetables. Whether you’re a first-time gardener or a gardening pro, this book offers amazing tips for you. Companion DVD, "Build a Keyhole Garden with Deb Tolman, Ph.D." is also available on Amazon.

The book does not really contain specific details or tips beyond what Dr. Deb has on her website or that can be found elsewhere on the internet for free. Another reviewer noted Dr. Deb's expertise was well worth the price of the book -- that would be true if she had included more details. For example, Chapter 5 "Fill er up" is less than 2 pages. The first page features a large photo of a garden made from wine bottles that takes up half the page; the diagram on the second page which simply repeats her simple formula of "3 buckets of browns to 1 bucket of green" takes up more than two-thirds of the page. That's it. No discussion of various recyclable materials (e.g. are magazines with glossy covers & plastic coating ok to use? What about cans, is there any value to adding aeration by layering cans as another gardening expert suggests?). No discussion of what kinds of manure are acceptable and which aren't (Can I use fresh horse or cow manure? Or does it need to dry out? Can I dump my guinea pig cage contents in there?) Plus no guidance on exactly how to "fill er up." Do we need to line the keyhole garden with cardboard? Do we need to soak it first? Do we need to provide aeration or anything to help with drainage? Do we need to do anything for pH or nutrient balance? Chapter 6 "Bring on the Plants" is also 2 pages, with four photos and text that says little more than to consult seed catalogs, read the Farmer's Almanac, and contact your local agriculture extension service to choose plants. That's it. The book is nothing more than an introduction to the concept of keyhole gardening, at best. I'm very sorry I spent my money on this and will quickly trade the book in. I wouldn't even gift it to a friend, as it has such little value.

By Nathan Diebenow Dr. Deb Tolman created her first keyhole garden out of necessity when her neck of Central Texas experienced severe drought. Thanks to the Internet, the world first learned her do-it-yourself, raised-bed, garden-in-compost method. As it were, her new book was also written out of necessity; frequent heavy rain events in the previous year cut off Internet access to the next generation of gardeners. In this context, Dr. Tolman's book focuses our attention on the importance of developing community knowledge networks around these innovative gardens. To me, Dr. Tolman's expertise in KHG building and community development is well worth the price of the book – which will be a go-to resource in times of Internet blackouts. The icing on the cake of her book is her personal growing calendar from which aspiring green-thumbs may adapt to their local climates. The calendar comprises the last third of the book. I also bought W. Leon Smith's book “Plant Your Garden In A Keyhole” along with hers because I wanted the second opinion from a “first adopter” of keyhole gardens. It turns out that his book is the chocolate to her peanut butter, or visa versa. I highly recommend both.

I was disappointed that the book did not have more step-by-step instructions on the construction of the gardens. Also, a bit more science (in layman terms, of course) that's behind the whole concept would help with understanding how it all works. Also, more information about Dr. Deb's gardening experiences would be helpful: How does she control pests (fire ants). What about her experience planting 70 tomato plants in one keyhole? This is amazing, but no information about what varieties of tomatoes. How much can these gardens yield? What about organic issues such as questions about toxins from the ink in newspapers and magazines or in the glue from all the card board that is used in the keyhole garden? Apparently, this is not an issue due to the soy-based inds. Overall, the book is a great primer, but very short indeed and for its $20 cost, it's definitely on the expensive side for the information provided.
