By carol morgan Although this was Conrad's last book, it is beautifully written with some wonderful descriptions of the landscape and ocean, typical of Conrad's style. He captures the tensions associated with the blockade of France during the Napoleonic years, and he has woven the history skilfully into the story, without it becoming tedious. The characters seem to have tortured lives in many ways, reflecting the brutality of the French revolution as well as the struggle for many to make sense of the world they lived in. The final chapters are like a modern thriller and the end, while expected, does have a sense of the continuity of life as well as the yearnings and dreams that cross all generations and apply to the human condition in a timeless way.
