The Japanese cruiser Chikuma According to the provisions of the Treaty of London light cruisers could be armed with cannons with a maximum caliber of 155mm in quantities up to 15 pieces. Japanese engineers, admirals and Fukuda Fujimoto developed a draft of the ship classified as "medium cruiser type". His task was to guard the main force fleet from attacks by enemy light forces and the fight against cruisers. The ship was ordered under the Second Fleet Expansion Program of 1934roku. Funds for the construction of the cruiser entered in the budget for 1935/1936. The ship, which was named Chikuma River (in Nagano Prefecture on the island of Honshu) was built in the shipyard of Mitsubishi Nagasaki.

It is uniform with the others in the series, an 8-1/4" x 11-3/4" stapled card cover with 80 interior pages. The pages are numbered counting the card covers for reasons that escape me. There is an unbound foldout so, as always, if buying second hand make sure it is included. There was a previous volume in this series dedicated to the Chikuma's sister ship, Tone. That may explain why the text is relatively abbreviated compared to the earlier work. It comprises parts of only four pages. The translation is not great with subtleties of English grammar and syntax escaping the translator. It is also confusing in a number of places. For example: "The electric power was produced by three generators rated at 300 kW, two 250-kW Diesel generators and five 225-kW generators. That sounds like nine total generators. But no, LaCroix and Well's superb "Japanese Cruisers of the Pacific War" clears the matter up - five 225 kW generators, three powered by 300 kW turbines and two by 250 kW diesels. But the next is not why we buy these books. The CAD images (or renders as Kagero refers to them) are superb and do a wonderful job of conveying the details of the ship. The captions could be a lot more informative but I can understand a reluctance to crowd the images. There were many items that cried out for comment but passed unmentioned, the torpedo directors being an example. The drawings in LaCroix and Wells helped out here as well. Interesting features covered in more detail than in the Tone book were the torpedo deck, and the interior of the 5" antiaircraft guns. The torpedo deck drawings even included sailors at work which I don't ever recall seeing in this series. Interestingly for a ship with such an extensive aviation capability (which dictated the unusual main armament arrangement) there are no aircraft hangersThe foldout has the conventional five views on one side at 1:350 scale and perspective drawings on the reverse. The draftsman probably overdid the lap strakes on the hull and the joints on the main turrets. The plan view looks like a grid has been overlaid on it making details hard to pick out.But in the final analysis the book is beautiful to look at and offers wonderful value for the money. I can recommend it whether or not one owns the earlier Tone book.
