Back before the days of RVs, nylon sleeping bags, and all the other modern camping conveniences, people still went camping. This updated and newly designed color edition of Camping in the Old Style explores the techniques and methods used during the golden age of camping, including woodcraft, how to set a campfire, food preparation, pitching a tent, auto camping, and canoeing.

The book is loaded with nuggets of wisdom from classic books written by camping and outdoors pioneers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, such as Daniel Carter Beard, Warren H. Miller, Ernest Thompson Seton, Horace Kephart, and Nessmuk, and author David Wescott includes his own methods, techniques, and philosophies as well. A generous addition of color photos of present-day classic camping enthusiasts supplements many of the fascinating archival black-and-white photos.

David Wescott is the author of Primitive Technology: A Book of Earth Skills. He has been a lifelong enthusiast in primitive technologies and a leading figure in wilderness education for more than forty years, including as the managing editor of the Bulletin of Primitive Technology, the director of Backtracks, and the education director for the Boulder Outdoor Survival School. He lives in Rexburg, Idaho, with his wife, Paula.

Worth a browse (bed) or serious reading By Jon Hancock For the modern hiker and camper many of the outdoors manuals of a century ago may seem like little more than charming period pieces, amusing for their glimpse of a primitive approach to a hobby now practised scientifically. Yet authors such as Horace Kephart were dealing with nutritional values, insulative and drying properties of clothing, ultralight shelters and more at a time when plastics and miracle fibres were simply not available. This splendid book, an oversized paperback, draws from many of the best works in the field (or, indeed, the forest)and ties the extracts together with introductions and comments by David Wescott. Unsurprisingly, given his published interests in primitive technologies, Mr Wescott is not at all enamoured with modern materials, and this does occasionally bias the text unduly. Nonetheless, he has done sterling work in bringing together a collection of themed articles, quotations and photographs which really do give the reader a good feeling for the way camping was practised. Best of all, much of what worked then is still surprisingly appropriate now, although inevitably you can expect a cool reception from landowners if you start constructing shelters and camp furniture from standing trees. Reading authors like Beard and Kephart, along with some less well remembered names gathered here, gives one a much greater understanding of how things work and work together than can be gained by simply buying the latest all-weather gadget and setting off with little knowledge of the outdoors. A heartily recommended book, with the sole negative observation that as with the Primitive Technology books this one is printed on an awful pulpy stock. The photographs in particular suffer badly as a result, and it is a real pity that such a handsome work could not have been given more handsome production.

Watts Camping In The Old Style pays reverent homage to Kephart, Seton and Beard--heroes to all who crave the smell of woodsmoke and canvas. It's as nourishing as a meal of honest grub cooked over and open fire, and as comforting as a soft wool blanket or a pair of well-worn moccasins. Woodcraft lives!

Don't waste your money By martea This book could have been great... the "scrapbook" style of clipping from older books creates a wonderfully nostalgic mood. But little of it was legible... You can't put black print on dark grey background and expect it to be readable. Also, the majority of the "clippings" came from only a few books, mostly by Warren Miller, some little from Kephart. There was nothing by Breck, Fordyce, White, Shields, Kreps, or a few other "golden age" authors who have published several books which are now in the public domain. The authors few personal observations (a small section, roughly 1/4 page every other page of the book) could have contained interesting insights, but again, was illegibly printed black on grey. (Yes, my eyesight is fine).I contacted the publisher immediately (as it is NOT Amazon's problem... all they do is ship it) and received no response, despite the author's stated desire for input. I am sorely disappointed, as I enjoyed an interview I once saw about the author and had great expectations. But I can warn others. Stay away. You will do better to obtain the public domain books by the authors already mentioned (for FREE) rather than pay for this one, and read them yourself.
