About the Author Heather Jones has a master’s degree (ABT) in art history from the University of Cincinnati. She is a quilt designer, teacher, and founder and former president of the Cincinnati Modern Quilt Guild. Her quilts have appeared in numerous publications, including Martha StewartLiving and Modern Patchwork. She is a two-time finalist in the Martha Stewart American Made Awards. She teaches online at Creativebug.com, on television at Quilting Arts TV, and in person throughout the country.

I have been a fan of Heather's designs for a few years now, but it wasn't until I read this book that I truly began to understand the meaning and inspiration behind her work. I have always been drawn to her designs because of the bold, modern patterns. However, I was surprised to learn that Heather uses the same method in her design process that quilting pioneers in our country have used for many years. In the book, Heather outlines her design process - she teaches exactly how to go about looking for inspiration in our findings, and how that inspiration translates to a quilt pattern. In addition, she talks in-depth about color theory, and simplifies the process of choosing colors for the design. I learned a lot from this chapter, since color is always something that I struggle with and tend to overcomplicate.In the end, I truly connected with the quilts in the this book and the stories behind them. This is such a beautiful, well-written book, and I whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone who is looking to create their own, unique quilt designs based on patterns and images that are present, but sometimes overlooked, in our everyday lives.

I got a few ideas to use while incorporating Alabama Chanin techniques versus true quilting techniques which I do not have the patience for. I consider this book more inspirational rather than making the projects presented, but that is just me.

We have both had the honor of meeting Heather and have found inspiration from her designs and her lectures. She is truly an amazing person and an extremely talented artist. The book is filled with ideas, easy to follow instructions and beautiful photographs. The quilt designs are modern yet many are inspired by time-honored traditional quilt blocks.
