Playful and profound By CIPANNE Politics and poetry are often seen as enemies: the former as the realm of compromise and conformity, the latter as the domain of pure spirit and the language that can evoke it. But in her first novel, Mhani Alaoui demonstrates what true revolutionaries have always known: that poetry is the most powerful political agent, and that what we call things is what they can become if the will is sufficiently strong and the vision clear.This is a story about stories, and incorporates into its picture of a specific and concrete place and time an acute post-modernist realization of the contingency of all narratives and the limits of all certainties. The complex plot is informed and inflected by an acute awareness of the attractions and dangers of both cynicism and blind belief, and the centrality of class, gender, and history to the construction of both.The Dreams of Maryam Tair is not an easy read, but it is certainly a rewarding one. The language is exquisitely wrought, and the philosophical insights provocative and often profound. It is not every novel with an animate bicycle and an orange tree as key characters that can promise such richness and such depth of feeling.

Holmes congrats to the author on this beautiful, elegantly written first novel where the reader discovers the magic and mysteries of morocco through the adventures of the brave young heroine, maryam tair. if you can break from your reading, it will be with much anticipation for your next available moment get lost again in her stories. so enjoyable, this book is surely going on my list of books to read a second time.
