2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. If you enjoy writing that is not wrapped up in a clean, pretty package but speaks the truth, do yourself a favor. Read this. By pjenning I recently finished reading Laura Pritchett's newest, beautiful, difficult book, Red Lightning. For years after reading Sky Bridge, I couldn't wait to be drawn back into the messy, basic but unsimple lives of sisters Libby and Tess and even their crusty mother, Kay. Laura's magic with words has only gotten stronger, her characters richer and occasionally hard to listen to, only because they are so real. Real stories aren't often pretty; they have teeth and bite; they have stinking wounds that can only heal from the inside out. Good health makes all things easier, but without sickness how do we appreciate feeling whole and sound? Laura's writing is a gift replete with the poetry of inner torment. Her characters are those people in our lives who are imperfect, but still do things that matter.Although this book is loosely a sequel to Sky Bridge, it stands alone beautifully. Having enjoyed Laura's writing once, you will definitely want to buy the other one, no matter which you read first. I'm not sure where they got the photo for this cover, because that is not the cover art from the book I purchased, although it is definitely the right book.

And taking it with her wherever she goes. In "Red Lightning," Tess comes crawling back home to NoWhere, Colorado after ten years of what she hoped would be high living. But running illegal Mexican immigrants deep into Colorado, along with the drugs they must carry, has finally scoured her out. Men have disappointed her. She's seen terrible things in the desert. She is flat broke. Tess has no more games to run when her beat up body drops down into the shade across the street from her daughter's schoolyard. The daughter she abandoned as a baby into the arms of her sister Libby.In the opening scene of this searing novel, Libby sees Tess waiting to speak to her, battered and mostly broken. But since author Pritchett places the novel's narration inside the mind of Tess, it is her desperate, selfish, imaginative, emotional perspective that makes as big a tale as the possible reunion here. How does a black sheep think/feel/justify/legitimize her terrible behavior? Step right up and let Tess tell you. It's a daring, dynamic ride.We first met these characters in Laura Pritchett's compelling novel "Sky Bridge." We saw teenaged Tess drive away laughing. We loved her older sister Libby for picking up Tess' baby and trying to make things right. "Red Lightning" takes up their story ten years later with the emotional force of a freight train. The novel really is that engaging. I found it impossible to read anything else for three days. It does not flinch from rendering up Tess' tangled insides. You may flinch but the novel does not.It is hard to know what to say about that kind of emotional truth telling. The novel maps the terrain of reactivity, of conflict and longing and loss. What drives Tess in the end—well, you'll have to read the book to know. Beneath the struggle and flight patterns and irresponsibility and anguish and "bringing all this holyhell here"—beneath that and within all that, Tess Cross comes home. If you've ever watched a black sheep tear a family apart and wondered about her point of view, this novel is for you. Pritchett is a brave writer. With a poet's heart.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A page-turner- gritty, stunning... By Tom Babajanian This has got to be Laura Pritchett's best novel yet. With an unflinching view of psychological trauma, mortality, personal regret, social injustice and family dysfunction, Pritchett manages to have written a book that is hard to read, but even harder to put down. All the while, as a backdrop, this book has as its setting, the rough landscapes of Pritchett's native Colorado. If the plot and characters have a gritty, dour realism about them, the story's setting is a tribute to the natural world found is Southern Colorado. Throughout the pages, the author gives voice and power to forgotten, ignored and disenfranchised people and places. This is really a must-read for anyone interested in environmental fiction or for that matter social justice and immigration issues.
