She would carefully remove all of the buttons and place them into a tin that sat on the table next to her chair. Then came the arduous task of sewing all of her strips together. My mom has been gone nearly 20 years now but the memory of her toiling away remains clear as glass. I can still see the satisfied smile upon her face as she would place her completed rug in some part of the house. The last rag rug she ever made resides in my home as a chair cover because I can't bear to put it on the floor! These happy memories instilled within me a love for rag rugs and recycling (I guess it's called upcycling these days) clothing into items that aren't just serviceable but beautiful. I can't help thinking about how much my mom would have loved a rotary cutter!This wonderful book contains 25 fun and interesting projects designed by 15 different artisans. All of these projects, upon completion, will become treasured heirlooms. I'm excited and eager to get started. The book is broken down with the projects and their instructions in the front followed by 28 pages of "Techniques" in the back. The instructions for the individual projects are given in US terms, are comprehensive, and very easy to follow. I love this book.The Technique Section is so detailed that I think a beginner could easily follow these fully illustrated instructions. Covered under this section are:BASIC TOOLS: Which is broken into Essential and Optional: Under essential are..large crochet hooks (US sizes M/N-13 US P/Q), scissors, and a blunt tapestry needle for working in the tails of fabric. Under optional tools are...cutting mat, rotary cutter, ruler designed for use with a rotary cutter, sewing needle and thread, and a sewing machine.FABRIC: Virtually any fabric can be used.HOOKS AND GAUGE: Includes a hook sizes chart and details about getting our gauge right.CUTTING AND JOINING YARN (Fabric): Cutting a continuous strip, cutting a continuous loop, cutting single strips, joining single strips (knotting, buttonhole join, and running stitch join).STARTING TO CROCHET: Holding the hook, holding the yarn, knots and chains, chain stitch, foundation chain.STITCHES: Slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and treble crochet.INCREASING and DECREASING: for all the stitches.SPECIAL STITCHES: Front post stitches, back post stitches, reverse single crochet, back loop only, front loop only, and working into the back strand.Working in the Round: Magic ring, ring of chains, working flat rounds, invisible join for a flat roundThroughout the book are bright orange text squares called Pattern Notes, which contain helpful hints and tips to help us achieve successful results and to make our work easier.
