James Glave, a self-professed “child of suburbia” and SUV driver, has an ecological awakening and decides he wants to live a carbon-reduced lifestyle without dropping out of society, alienating his friends and family, or breaking the bank. Lacking the budget to build an environmentally friendly house, he does the next best thing by constructing a new model home in miniature: a “green” writing studio.Along the way, he employs local gurus and energy-savvy builders, tries—and sometimes fails—to navigate the emerging social landscape of the nouveau-green world, and finds himself ensnared in the emotional entanglements of the high-octane era. With two small kids, escalating debt, and mounting material pressures, Glave begins to wonder whether he can really endure the strain of being a “culdesactivist.” As he probes the crazy zone between the relentlessly upbeat eco-evangelists and the Hummer pilots that roam his small suburban community, Glave explores one of the biggest questions of our age: Can a man with a modest salary afford to live a green lifestyle, and at what cost to his family? How does one embrace a greener life and keep everybody in it happy along the way? Almost Green is a hilarious, informative, and refreshingly irreverent account of one man’s fumbling quest to reinvent suburbia—starting with his own front yard.

Almost Green: How I Saved 1/6th of a Billionth of the Planet, by James Glave

From Booklist You know how they say you shouldn’t bite off more than you can chew? Well, when the author, an SUV-driving magazine writer, decided it was about time to be a bit more friendly toward the environment, he started small: he planned to make himself a writing studio with a minimal environmental footprint. But building a “green” house, even a tiny one, proved to be a bigger job than Glave had realized, even with the seemingly (but deceptively) large budget of $50,000. This is a lighthearted chronicle of the construction project, but it’s more than quirky enviro-characters and Blandings-style misadventures. The book also tackles some pretty serious issues, such as extremism in the environmental movement, the self-contradictions, and (perhaps most important) how to balance the needs of the planet with the needs of one’s own family—how to choose what sacrifices to make (and then how to explain them to your kids). A delightful book that takes a big theme, environmentalism, and puts it into the context of daily life. --David Pitt

Cole A determined, idealistic young man attempts to put his green commitment to the test as he moves his dream eco-office-shed/guest quarters from talk to reality. An amusing, self-depreciating navigation through a multitude of challenges 21st century life throws in our way as we attempt to put our ideals into practice. Mr. Glave is a talented writer who pulls the reader into his life. I got caught up in James' emotional ride as he deals with the various challenges this project doles out to him. By the time I finished reading, I found myself wanting to visit the eco-shed of Bowen Island as one might take a pilgrimge to an ancient shrine! I hope this young man will use his eco-shed writing room and grace us with more tales and experiences. I'd settle for the "good read" he offers, yet you can feel the fervor of his commitment to our planet and thus the reader will find himself also interested in what further challenge, informative guidance and inspiration James Glave will offer us to move us further along that path to a truly sustainable planet. Strongly recommended.

I was disappointed that he wasn't done with the thing, but was done with the book. I felt there was jumping the gun involved here. Who knows, maybe he needed the money from the book sale to help pay off the eco-shed someIt's not the book is BAD... it's just I wouldn't spend money on owning it. I got my copy from the library and had fours weeks to read it. It only took three-days. It WAS funny, but a little erratic in it's story line. HE devotes a WHOLE chapter to getting his neighbor to turn off flood lights. It didn't have a lot to do with the shed. And then towards the end we go from the concrete being poured to then about how he's trying to sell the Lexus and then back to the shed which now has walls and roof. WHAT?... when did that happen???And "Green" is a relative term for the amount of money he had to spend on it, how much more working hours or days in the city did he and his wife need to do in order to pay for this thing? So how much fossil fuel is being used in that aspect. How much could have been saved by building a LESS eco-friendly shed?He goes into saving rain water, but then uses a Petroleum based plastic cistern to hold this water and then a electrical pump to run it back up to where he needs it. And then there's ALL this talk about the eco-costs for the concrete already poured and he STILL goes ahead and rips it up...It's not that I think he's a bad guy or bad writer. Just the opposite. I enjoyed READING the book and he's probably the type guy I would drink a six-pack of micro brewed beer with.He spent too much time on NON eco-shed stories... they should of been more side notes then whole devoted chapters that sent the book off subject.I wouldn't buy this book but I would certainly recommend finding a copy at the library if you've got nothing else to read. But i think Novella was MUCH more eco-frinedly in her lifestyle as written her book "Farm City"

Reading this account of a family man building his own writing shack--called an Eco-Shed--is hilarious and keeps the Old Man (Henry David Thoreau) in perspective. I found his lively writing style witty and informative and rarely reflective, but not a bad thing for humor writing. When he does pause to moralize, maybe twice in the book, it is worth it. (First, Preservationists will be more important in the years ahead than architects--p. 132; and Two, how he ends the book, whatever your dream is for Eco-anything, just get out there and do it. Eventually 1/6 of 1,000,000,000 of Eco-revitalization will add up.)My wife and I having lived through a re-model and add-on ourselves last year, I could relate in many ways to the things that he was describing. I really enjoyed his quick wit. I hope that now that the Eco-Shed has been completed, he will use by writing some more books.I will pass on this read to my former general contractor and hope that he reads it with as much pleasure. I sense that the book's hasty closing, though, had to do with the fact that he had run out of money, his wife had run out of patience, and his book needed to get sold. That's ok. Good things come to those who are patient.I wish that he had supplied photos to illustrate the project though.
