About the Author As a multiple world champion Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitor, as well as a martial arts expert and teacher (having trained the likes of Chuck Norris and many top UFC fighters), David Meyer has spent a lifetime enabling weaker individuals to become stronger. But as the Co-Founder and President of Adopt-a-Pet.com, he is a passionate advocate for the truly powerless in our society – abandoned and homeless animals. David has used his skills to help guide Adopt-a-Pet.com to become the world’s largest non-profit homeless pet adoption website, and he continues to push the organization forward and act as a spokesperson for all shelter animals. Dr. Pia Salk specializes in social justice and the human-animal bond. She is an Adopt-a-Pet.com spokesperson and a contributing writer to their website, her writing was also included in the recently published book, Pet Loss and Human Emotion. She is a frequent guest on the Martha Stewart Show and was a regular guest contributor to The Maratha Stewart blog “The Daily Wag”. TIP FROM THE BOOK- MAKE TIME TO SETTLE IN Whenever you introduce a new dog into your home, allow for a several-week adjustment period when you can expect some challenges. This applies even if you are adopting a housetrained dog, but is especially true if you are getting a puppy. Although he will quickly adapt to his new family, a puppy will initially miss his mom and littermates. It’s important to be at home as much as you can for the first few weeks to keep a constant watch on your new family member, to start the housetraining process, and begin to forge a friendship that will last a lifetime.

A copy should be in every dog household By Bridget Fabulous book - EVERYONE should read this manual; especially before you get a dog. Most people do not do the research before getting a dog - this can be a catastrophe for both owner and dog. This manual outlines the proper, smart and safe steps that anyone should follow when looking to introduce a new animal into their life - albeit dog specific; common sense and prior proper planning are essential to "owning" any animal.This book is a staple, as far as I'm concerned, and a copy should be in the home of any dog lover/animal lover.I have done animal rescue all of my life; dog, cat, equine, bird - you name it. And, I 'm a certified dog trainer - not bragging just trying to give an honest review and give basis to my opinion.Buy this book today - read it - then adopt your new best friend!

The perfect book for a novice dog parent By NCPinAtl As the new human to a wonderful mutt, adopted at the Atlanta Humane Society, I didn't know where to start to learn about the care and feeding of Lola Grace. I was at a loss. Then I remembered Adopt-a-Pet.com had published The Total Dog Manual. I ordered it straight away.Boy am I glad I did.I read the book from nose to tail (beginning to end) the first night I got it. The book is organized into sections from choosing a dog to caring for one to training it. I woke up the next day and reviewed some of the most relevant sections. It will be my go-to guide for questions as I have them.

This book is well organized and very thorough and comes from people who are out there -- on the frontlines -- helping animals. They know their stuff and it shows. I hate having to go to a million different places to find the info I need. This book makes it easy to get my questions answered. I'm sending it as a holiday gift to everyone I know who has a dog. GREAT resource.
