In 1676, an unlikely pair—a young Puritan widow and an English spy—journeys across a land where greed and treachery abound.
Prudence Cotton has recently lost her husband and is desperate to find her daughter, captured by the Nipmuk tribe during King Philip’s war. She’s convinced her daughter is alive but cannot track her into the wilderness alone. Help arrives in the form of James Bailey, an agent of the crown sent to Boston to investigate the murder of Prudence’s husband and to covertly cause a disturbance that would give the king just cause to install royal governors. After his partner is murdered, James needs help too. He strikes a deal with Prudence, and together they traverse the forbidding New England landscape looking for clues. What they confront in the wilderness—and what they discover about each other—could forever change their allegiances and alter their destinies.

This novel is intriguing fiction that combines mystery and adventure with thorough historical research. Although it starts a little slowly the pace ramps up and soon the reader is immersed in a completely different place and time, namely the American colonies under British rule and 100 years before independence. This is a world where people live in small communities surrounded by vast wilderness, are constantly threatened by persecuted tribes, and try to live their lives without falling foul of strict and repressive Puritan dogma. Crow Hollow is rich with detail and insight into this period of time; I found it very interesting and would be happy to read a sequel. The story is set in Boston during the year 1676. Widowed Prudence Cotton is bereft at the kidnapping of her three-year-old daughter Mary by the Native American Nipmuk tribe. Prudence herself was a prisoner of this Nipmuk, suffered severe hardship, but managed to escape, although she had no choice but to leave without her precious child.James Bailey is an agent of King Charles and has been sent to the colonies from England to investigate the murder of Prudence's husband Sir Benjamin Cotton. Prudence is determined to retrieve her daughter and James agrees to help her find Mary. Thus together they travel across a daunting landscape and uncover a web of deceit, manipulation and murder.Characterisation is very good; I like James even though his constant leching at the beginning annoyed me at first! Prudence is the defining character though as her determination, intelligence and bravery are admirable and the reader roots for her throughout. This is not a light read by any means, it is dark, gruesome and violent, but the author with a deft touch manages to inject humour into the narrative and I chuckled out loud in a few places: "They hang fornicators in Massachusetts. Or force them into marriage. I don't know which is worse."Overall, combined with great characters, a wonderful writing style and an excellent storyline, Crow Hollow is a real treat for historical fiction fans and also for those who enjoy a terrific adventure. Recommended!

The characters are believable, Prudence will capture your heart and at the same time roar with laughter at her attitude. Mr. Wallace kept my attention in telling this story of an agent of the King of England trying to find out what caused the massacre of both Indian tribes and the King's subjects at Crow Hollow and surrounding areas in 1676. Although the story was predictable, I still enjoyed it. The main characters James, the agent and Prudence, a witness to the slaughters, were well developed. His description of the living conditions that the people endured just to survive was believable. Other characters used were necessary to the storyline not just "there" to fill up space. The story went at a steady pace except, to me, the ending was rushed and unbelievable. But I didn't live in that era, so what do I know about interrupting the King during an interrogation. It was a good uncomplicated read. Thank you Mr. Wallace.Good reading to all, retired to read.
